After being exiled to the farmland around her village, Rowan Northwood takes the only chance at freedom she might ever get: she runs away with a passing Knight and doesn't look back. The woman cares nothing for Rowan's company, but nor does she seem perturbed by the powers that burn within her.
Rowan soon learns that the scope of their journey is more than a desperate grasp at adventure. She breaks away from the weighty judgement of her village, but has no choice but to abandon her Kingdom altogether. Sir Ightham's past leads them through Kastelir, a country draped in the shadow of its long-dead Queen—a woman who was all tusks and claws and great, spiralling horns.
Hiding her necromancy is no longer Rowan's greatest challenge, and what leads them across Kingdoms and through mountains is a heavier burden than she ever could've imagined.

I read a lot of books, but rarely do I post reviews. When I do, it's usually because of me wanting to see more from an author, and this is definitely the case here. I want others to see this review and hope they join in encouraging the author to continue their work. There are a few grammatical errors/dropped words, but that's about it as far as flaws go for a debut novel. The story and characters were full, but in that driving way that leaves room for a second and a third helping as well.

Read this book!
By Madeline Vara
Must. Read. Those two words summarize this book in nutshell. Dragonoak is first and foremost a creative, innovative fantasy novel, one that starts out with a relatively simple and familiar premise (knights, dragons, magic), but the rapidly moves toward hinting at turning many of the tired out and old tropes of fantasy on their heads. It’s clear as you read this novel that things are not always what they seem, and I tremendously look forward to what the coming novel will bring. The plot, the characters, the world-building…everything about this novel quickly draws you in, with polished writing to top it all off. In addition to these staple requirements for an excellent read, Dragonoak boasts a host of extremely diverse characters, spotlighting on many queer characters without ever actually making the book and the world and plot about their sexuality or gender. Dragonoak is a world where characters simple are who they are—their sexual preferences or gender identities don’t change how they are perceived by the surrounding inhabitants, which I think in particular makes these books that much more of an amazing read. The characters are defined by rape, or by being lesbian or genderqueer…the story is simple about a greater epic taking place with characters who happen not to fall into heteronormative tropes. If you’re looking for a high fantasy novel filled with knights and dragons and kings and queens and necromancers, with personable characters of intense depth, with plot that pulls you in and grips you for what will happen next, then look no further. This book is well worth the time.

A really fantastic mogai fantasy book
By Andrifet
A really fantastic mogai fantasy book. It's got great representation - most of the characters are queer women of color. The fantasy setting and magic are standard enough to be able to imagine but full of enough twists to be unique. But what impressed me most about this book was how artfully it unfolded out from something that felt relatively straightforward into a layers of of complexity, depth and surprises. The reader, just like the main character, starts out the story barely knowing anything about the world, its history, or the people inside it. But the farther along you read, the more you learn how there's a lot more to everything than originally anticipated. It's a suspenseful, enthralling and fascinating read.
