Fine writing, rich vision, sharp eye for detail

This is a lovely, heartfelt, scrupulously honest book that, while focused on the vibrant, striving Africa our media ignore (until tragedy strikes), ranges in its settings from generations of wrenching change--wistfully recounted--in northern New Jersey's hard streets (Springsteen-with-spaghetti meets black activisim) to the resilient spirit of African writers and poets who are determined to create in their own languages in their reborn states. But all of poet Charles Cantalupo's many journeys into what emerges as an African "Heart of Brightness" reveal not only a life-affirming "hidden" Afica (hidden only because we choose not to see it), but the inspiring evolution of a white American fighting to help his fellow word-wizards without the least condescension. Ultimately, it's Cantalupo's integrity (as man and writer) and open sensibility that make this book work so well. He brings to bear a poet's eye and ear for the details that spark life up from the page, and his paragraphs truly do transport you to the war-weathered art-deco treasures of Asmara, to the raw highlands and thorn-spiked deserts, through first encounters with an Africa that can, indeed, seem "other" to the unprepared visitor, to a genuine understanding and profound emotional bond with an Africa at once particular and universal. So...this is a book of finely described physical journeys, but also of a good man's spiritual journey. It is, simply, a wonderful book about life.

Overall, NOT a good textbook

As a software engineer myself, I found a lot of the text unnecessarily wordy and complicated. In some cases, certain more advanced topics are discussed without more background information, so I can see how a beginner might be totally confused from this book. And to make things worse, several of the examples have typos in them which can make things even more confusing.

Overall, there are many C books that are much better than this, so unless you're forced to buy this book as a textbook for a course, I would definitely not pick this one.

If you want to learn C, this book might eventually get you there, but it felt pretty fluffy. 1000+ pages is a little much for such a simple language as C.

I also was floored to see code samples in the book that have syntax errors and don't compile.

Simple and straight forward

I studied from this book for my class two years ago. I thought that the book carefully explains concepts with out being wordy, which lessen the frustrations and uneasiness of learning how to program for the first time. After each major new concept, the book writes an example program. Following the programs are explanations of everything in the program. Why they write this or why use this method, etc. The exercises are helpful. However, if they have a solution guide to go with it, it would had been even better. Overall, this book is great for anyone trying to learn C on their own. It doesn't leave out anything and the concepts are explained in a straightforward and clear manner.

Without even owning the book, I could have stated some of the information given by the other reviewers simply based upon what the book's intentions are in the first place. It should be noted that this book is intended for people in very specific areas, that it is meant to give information on aquiring money for a number of very specific groups. Because one person didn't find a group to fit them does not mean that another person will not; people seem to have an erroneous viewpoint of the book's purpose. If you want free money obtainable for little more than writing to an address (and there are few other places to obtain such addresses, another purpose of this book) then I suggest trying your state's Welfare program. If you're willing to do a little more than put pen to paper, this book shows you how to go about making your work pay off. I live in a very small, rural community and have few aquaintances, of those few at least two (the ones I've spoken to about it) have either gotten money using the information in this book, or know someone who has. The other reviewers seem to be expecting greenbacks to fall out of the front cover when the book is first opened.

Life is not a game show

This is not a printed version of "Do You Want to Be a Millionaire?" It's based on the assumption that you want to CHANGE your life for the better, and are willing to take action to do so. You have to exercise your intellect, your intuition, your initiative, and your skills in (1) deciding which life-changing activities you want money for, (2) selecting the best possibilities for funding them, and (3) filling out applications, writing grant proposals, or something similar. I found the book a very useful compilation: while the information is available elsewhere, it's often hard to find, and this book not only put it all together but allowed you to make comparisons easily. While some of the addresses and phone numbers are out of date, that's inevitable in any printed reference work, and (in my experience) this book was better than average. If you want to transform your life, and just need the money to do so, this book can show you how to get it. But if you're contented to remain a couch potato, and want to do it in a bigger house with a wide-screen TV, sorry; you might as well save your money and buy a lottery ticket.

If you are a one-eyed one-legged Black woman living in public housing in Alabama and your grandmother is part Cherokee, this book is for you. Otherwise forget it.. You will get more money holding up a liquor store than you will by reading this book... A lot of hype and no pay off..

The book is your source to a plethora of additional problems. Yet don't expect the exam problems to be similar to those you find in this Schaum series. You might find some of these problems extra strenuous or over-simplified. For all the major functional groups, the book does provide lots of practice problems in reaction products, reactivity, and stereochemistry. You might need to cover up the solutions which immediately follow the questions. Students should foucs on soloving the mechanism-type of problems from textbooks before looking at this book. I got this product as a supplement for my organic chemistry class. At the end I did not use it as much as I expected. It does have a lot of problems and exercises but it wasn't the approach that my professors gave. Therefore, if you are looking for a book with a lot of problems to practice for your organic chemistry class this is the book. But if you are looking a supplement for your course, find another one.
