The best of the book is the first chapter where we can find a quick summary of different authors about what they consider the most relevant news values. Then the authors present their own selection of news values and analyze some news with that pattern. I do not think that this selection is particularly significant or complete. Nor do I see a criterion related to a hierarchy among these factors: whether some are more important than others. The final chapter on the Litvinenko case illustrates well how stories are constructed in the press.

Terrible Unedited Garbage

I am taking a course at ASU instructed by the author of this book. Not only is the book useless in terms of his class, it is also very clearly unedited. There are headers that are unbolded and sections that don't belong in the chapters they were placed in. The format of the book is atrocious as well. Sections of chapters are harder to distinguish due to the one formatting technique used, bolded headers. There is no way to distinguish whole sections from subsections. The ironic thing is that the professor is trying to teach us how to earn an honest buck by selling us this garbage that he makes a profit off of.

When you read the book you get general idea of the history of the USA. It's not too detailed (for example, there is very little knowledge of certain presidents and events)but it covers all the important issues well. There is some amount of statistics but I believe they just emphesize the facts presented.
Only minus comes from the "aftermath" of 9/11. It seemed to convict the Clinton administration for causing the September attack and left other factors, such as, Bush senior and his administration (and the Gulf war) with little thought.
I didn't also like the particular sentence of how CIA should have involved more deeply in the observation of other countries:
"Sometimes, nations need to play dirty tricks."
But I guess it can be difficult to be objective when you live in the USA and have experienced a catastrophy such as 9/11. Still, as an European myself, I was quite dissapointed with the end. The end bothers me a bit but at least it gives me an alternative perspective to think about.

Delamotte (English, Arizona State Univ.), Jean O'Barr (director of women's studies, Duke Univ.), and Natania Meeker, a Duke graduate student, have compiled an impressive collection of women's writings through the ages. The book is organized into six sections: Sexuality, Spirituality, and Power; Work and Education; Representing Women; Writing the Body Politic; Identifying Sources of Resistance; and Vision and Transformation. The collection presents writings ranging from Sumangalamata, a Buddhist nun (sixth century B.C.E.) to a section from the "Platform for Action" of the Beijing Conference in 1995. Also very useful are indexes by geographical location and chronology, since women from 40 countries are included. This will make an excellent reader for survey classes on world history as well as women's history and studies. Feminism

I love this book because it contains the printed words of feminists from different parts of the world and different time periods. It will teach you about philosophy, history, and explores how culture, religion, and physical violence have been used to support and enforce male dominance for thousands of years. I got this book for my Humanities class, but I'm still reading it now because it has such interesting and valuable content.

Don't bother buying

It was in nice condition but a chunk of pages were missing pages 13-60 which is stupid because the book is now useless for me !!! Notice in my picture the page numbers are on the bottom. Beyond upset!!!!

This large body of research has demonstrated the power of eye movements as experimental tools. The second part of the book applies this synthesis to the clinical and laboratory evaluation of patients with abnormal eye movements due to a broad range of disorders - from muscular dystrophy, and genetic disorders, to dementia, including visual and vestibular conditions. By placing links to figures, tables, boxes, and videos, a synthesis of basic research and clinical findings is provided, that may shed new light on disease processes and provide insights on normal brain function.

About the Author

Dr. Leigh, who trained in neurology at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Cornell Medical Center in New York, and the Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, has applied eye movements to study a broad range of disorders affecting the brain, eye, or ear during his career as a clinician-scientist. He has served on review committees of the National Institutes of Health and on the editorial boards of journals Annals of Neurology and Neurology. His collaboration of over 35 years with Dr. Zee has produced many joint publications including five editions of the Neurology of Eye Movements.

Dr. Zee first came to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore in 1965 as a medical student and then trained there in neurology after an internal medicine internship at Cornell Medical Center in New York. Both his research and clinical focus has been on eye movement and vestibular disorders. He has had three sabbatical years at the National Eye Institute in their Laboratory of Sensorimotor Research. He first began working with Dr. Leigh in the late 1970s when Dr. Leigh was at Hopkins as a fellow and then a faulty member.
