This inaugural picture book for both author and artist features an oddball girl whose differences teach her classmates to appreciate their own unique qualities. On the first day of school, while the other children bring the teacher cinnamon tea and potpourri, Velvet offers "an egg carton filled with seven rocks, her favorite red shoelaces, and a half a sparrow's egg." Velvet sports long red braids, enormous round glasses and candy-striped stockings, and when the children notice that she is not wearing a new dress, they point and laugh: "Where did she come from?" But the taunting never gets out of hand, thanks to the author's restraint and pictures that exaggerate the features of all the schoolchildren. King's double spreads play with shifts in proportion, conveying a sense of Velvet's isolation. In an especially effective spread of a field trip, Velvet sits alone on the bus explaining how she got her name as the scene outside emulates her description of the day she was born: "The sun was just rising over the mountains, and outside it looked as though the world had been covered with a blanket of smooth, soft, lavender velvet." Her classmates' attitude toward Velvet changes when she wins a school drawing contest, and her "oddness" is finally appreciated. This one's for anyone who feels different or who knows someone who's different; everyone will recognize Velvet . Ages 3-8.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-From the first day of school, Velvet's classmates think that she is strange. When the other girls bring their dolls for show-and-tell, she brings a milkweed pod. With her purple dress, huge glasses, and peppermint-stick tights, this girl is clearly too odd to be picked as a play partner-or a friend. But slowly, her unique characteristics-her rock collection, her ability to draw lovely pictures with only the eight basic crayons-seem more interesting than strange, and a wonderful birthday party at her house cements the other children's acceptance of this imaginative child. Though the moral is pretty obvious, it doesn't detract from this lighthearted story about a youngster who is different. Color-pencil-and-pastel illustrations show the winsome Velvet and her classmates with exaggerated expressions and from a variety of perspectives. Both the artwork and the writing save the story from becoming too saccharine. A promising debut for both author and illustrator, and a commendable addition to libraries.

A gentle tale of acceptance

Velvet has a golden childhood. She finds beauty and joy in the smallest things and the simplest pleasures. Seemingly without any concern for peer group criticism, she carries on unaffected by the observations and mild teasings of the other children in her class. Eventually, of course, they come to appreciate Velvet's perspective, and the class princess even considers her a friend (no small feat in real life). The skewed perspective of the illustrations works to bring the focal point to the fore. Squatters at the back of the classroom's reading rug can easily see the most important detail without being distracted by other detritus on the page. This book is one of those high-demand repeats in our kindergarten and first grade classes. On a larger scale we adults yearn to meet the parents of this special child. We are left to wonder if the family is of lesser means, or if they have discovered the richness of a simple life by having had that "other life" before children came along. Either way, they must clearly have one of those home environments of love and acceptance that thoughtful parents strive for.

A real help for our situation...

When I was a full-time nanny for a little girl who felt that she "didn't quite fit in" with her peers, I found this book to be so very helpful. We discovered it by accident at a local library - and we borrowed it so much that we had to purchase it.

The book simply depicts an imaginative, slightly "odd" young girl who at first is resisted by her classmates and then - without having to change who she is - eventually becomes accepted by them. Most tales of this kind have the "odd" character performing some kind of special deed in an effort to redeem themselves in the eyes of those who resist them (i.e. Tacky the Penguin). But what I love about this book is that Velvet does not have to "save the day" in order for her classmates to accept her. She just remains her - and they eventually come around to thinking that she is pretty cool just the way she is.

I understand the criticism that the story is boring. I conceed that it is not particularly adventurous, humorous, etc. But it is a story of validation for those who are different.

A message of both acceptance of self and others

This book was given to my daughters (then ages 2 1/2 and 5) as a gift and continues to be a favorite a year later. They LOVE the pictures, which are charming and oddly appealing. The faces are multi-cultural as well. The books two messages are offered subtly but clearly. Velvet is confident in who she is and what she likes in spite of the other children -- what parent could hope for more! The other children, at first inclined to whisper about how "Odd" Velvet is, quickly become intrigued by, then enchanted with and eventually start to emulate Velvet and her so-called 'odd' (e.g. not like EVERYONE else) ways. This book is a simple yet a great way to open up discussions with children about the importance of both of these values. It's a favorite now on our 'to give' list.

A bit different from her first two books, and even better.

When Christi told me she was writing a book about a woman in an abusive relationship, I couldn’t imagine any way she would be able to do that. Her stories are about people with strong moral character in pursuit of their dreams; who overcome difficulty with courage and find romance somewhere along the way.
I know a thing or two about abusive people and their targets, having made it the focus of my studies at seminary. They are not romantic, and not entertaining to read about. Or so I thought.
Her story took me on a roller coaster ride from calm anticipation through fear, sadness, tension, anxiety, anger and – total surprise – romance and laughter. Amazing.
All the hallmarks of Christi’s work are in this book – her standards for clean writing and her belief in a code of honor that demands integrity from her main characters, along with the ability to create scenes that feel more real than imagined.

Another fantastic read by Christi Corbett!!

As with all of Christi's books you can tell the amount of time, research and hard work that goes into making her stories as accurate as possible. A Mountain Man's Redemption is about Phillip, a fur trapper in Montana set in the 1880's. As Phillip is on his way to make the last trade of the season, he comes across a young mother and her baby. Will he risk everything that he's worked so hard for in order to help them, or will he leave them to find their own way?

The story moves at a good pace and keeps the reader interested and also has a little suspense. Although it's not a book with Romantic love, the love really pours off the pages. This is a great heart warming story and I loved it!!

This novella deals with the tough subject of abuse. I hope that if someone reads this and find that it speaks to them, that they get help. No one deserves to be made to feel less than wonderful.

A fur-trapper who lives on his own in the Montana wilderness during the winter of 1886 is best served when he has only himself to worry about for survival, but when Philip Grant comes across an unexpected duo in need of help, he must decide whether to put his own life on the line to save them, or walk away.

Philip has had a good haul for a fur-trapper this season, but he soon finds himself with only ten days left to get his furs to the nearest fort, more than eighty miles away. It will be a difficult journey, which must be made quickly. But before long, he finds himself challenged with more than just time and distance. The reader will learn that Philip has his own demons in life to battle, but none more urgent that Hannah whom he discovers battered and beaten and clutching a baby in the middle of a harsh winter. Slowly and out of necessity, Hannah begins to explain the circumstances that have driven her, literally, out into the snow without proper gear for herself or her baby. With Philip’s continued prompting, the young mother confides in the fur-trapper, telling a heartbreaking story of abuse by her husband.

Wife abuse is not your average storyline in a historic novel, but maybe we should see it more often. The story is built upon a strong faith, and is historically accurate. It shows us that what we believe to be a modern problem is not at all. The reader gets a vastly different perspective in this well-written story.

This is a quick read, which is what brings me to my only criticism of the story. In the story’s beginning, Philip discovers a quilt in the snow-covered woods, and although we already know he is behind schedule and has an urgent need to get to Fort Matiley before it closes, which involves crossing “the most rugged mountain peaks in Montana,” he moves far too slowly. He spends too much time deciding whether to find out what’s inside the mysterious quilt. There were a few other points in the story where I felt things needed to move more quickly, given the urgency, too. With that said, this story was nearly flawless in its delivery.

If you’re looking for historical fiction, or a story with a 1880s flare, and the theme of a battered woman won’t deter you, then this is a story worth your time.

About the Author
James E. Tisdale, PharmD, BCPS, FCCP Dr. Tisdale received his B.Sc. Pharm from the University of Manitoba in 1983 and his Pharm.D. from S.U.N.Y. at Buffalo in 1988. He completed a pharmacy practice residency at the University of Manitoba Health Science Center in 1984 and a Fellowship in Cardiovascular Therapeutics at Hartford Hospital (CT.) from 1988-1990. He is currently Professor of Pharmacy Practice in the Department of Pharmacy Practice Personnel at the Purdue University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Tisdale’s research interests are in the area of cardiovascular pharmacotherapy, focusing on: mechanisms, risk factors, and management of drug-induced arrhythmias, and drug therapy for prevention and treatment of atrial fibrillation. His research has resulted in the publication of nearly 50 journal articles, 6 book chapters and 40 research abstracts in addition to his co-editorship of Drug-Induced Diseases. Prevention, Detection and Management. Dr. Tisdale’s research has been funded by the American Heart Association, numerous foundations, and the pharmaceutical industry. From 2001-2004, he was a member of the Board of Regents of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and from 2008-2009 he was Chair, Clinical Sciences Section, Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science, American Pharmacists Association (APhA). Dr. Tisdale is currently President-Elect of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP).  Douglas A. Miller, Pharm.D. Dr. Miller is a professor at the Wayne State University Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Detroit, where he teaches courses dealing with professional practice and patient care. He earned his BS in Pharmacy from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and his Pharm.D. from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. His pharmacy experience includes practice in community, long term care and hospital settings. For more than 20 years, he led a team that conceptualized and implemented innovative clinical pharmacy services at Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital. Dr. Miller served as a member of the Michigan Board of Pharmacy for 11 years including two terms as board chair. He has also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Pharmacists Association and the boards of both the Michigan Pharmacists Association and the Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists. He is the recipient of several awards and honors including the Annual Alumni Award of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and the Distinguished Alumni Award of the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, the Pharmacist of the Year Award of the Michigan Pharmacists Association, and awards from both ASHP and APhA for outstanding practice in hospital pharmacy. In 1990, 1991, 1995, 2004, and 2007 he was named "Teacher of the Year" at the Wayne State University Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.Dr. Miller is a Fellow of the American Pharmacists Association.

The pictures are good but somewhat outdated. Still there are basic information that is still current and good reading. Purchased for a medical department employees to read.

Excelente libro!

Hay cientos de libros acerca de cómo cuidar un bebé. Como padre primerizo, quería leer alguno y no sabía cuál. Siendo que trabajo en informática, estoy acostumbrado a leer manuales de equipos y software. Mi hermano, me regaló este mismo libro en inglés y yo compré este para mi esposa. Ella había leído varios, pero este fue el que más le gustó. Está escrito en forma muy amena, con mucho humor y varios gráficos estilo "años 50 y 60" como ejemplos. Explica las cosas como un manual técnico lo haría, pero con muchísimo humor como mencioné anteriormente. Enseña a cuidar nuestro bebé desde antes de nacer y hasta pasado el primer año. No por estar escrito con humor o en forma de manual técnico tiene poco rigor científico, su autor es un pediatra y su hijo. Ah, es de tamaño "paperback", lo que permite llevarlo fácilmente y leerlo en los ratos libres (yendo y viniendo del trabajo en bus o tren).
