Chris Colfer is AMAZING!

This book is absolutely amazing! It's got everything! It's so funny and it really makes us realize that high school is exactly like this. It also has a twist in the ending that I honestly did not expect but in a way it made sense to go in the direction he went. Chris Colfer is an extraordinary writer and this book shows what he's capable of writing and how it can be turned into a feature film. Totally recommend it to everyone, you will not regret it.

Wolpe, who teaches at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles, uses Judaism as a grounding point for a general spiritual quest. He emphasizes that Jews are bound together throughout history by their belief in one God, their resilience and their great gifts to culture. Judaism, he says, as "a religion of joy and affirmation in spite of the sufferings of the Jewish people," honors all features of being human, stresses the importance of deeds as a sign of faith and rejoices in the personal, deep involvement of God.

Judaism shares in the rebirth of interest in traditional religions and, as Wolpe presents it, welcomes that interest in order to both bring secular Jews back to the faith and make converts. In his clear and welcoming primer, Wolpe says a person chooses Judaism "To Grow in Soul," "To Join a People," and "To Seek God," as the titles of his three chapters state. Much of what Wolpe imparts--Judaism's joyousness, dedication to good works, love of learning, community solidarity, concern for justice--will be familiar; other aspects of the religion, particularly the open nature of the Jewish sense of being chosen by God, will pack the power of pleasant surprise for many. Some Christians, especially members of the peace churches (Mennonites, Quakers, Brethren), may think they have heard lots of this sermon before. They have: a great deal of it is bedrock Christianity. This little book is a beautiful read. He describes the essential ideas, attitudes, and perceptions of Judaism with eloquent, if not poetic, language that touches the heart. I am not religious or observant, but I am seeking to find my own spirituality within Judaism. This book goes straight to the heart of Juadaism. I highly recommend it.

Extremely rewarding & short too

I loved this book! In a very few pages, it gives you a sense of why the author, and by extension anyone else, would want to be a Jew. Moreover, the book is written in a beautifully lyric prose, which was beautiful & easy to read. I would love to mass produce this book & give it to every non-Orthodox Jew as well as anyone thinking of conversion. What a treat!

Review of "Why Be Jewish?"

The author answers the question "Why Be Jewish?" in three organized and artfully written sections from a non-sectarian Jewish perspective. The reading is easy yet insightful and intelligent. I'd recommend this book to anyone considering conversion to Judaism as well as family and friends of the convert. (Of course, conversion to Judaism is a highly personal, serious task and is not encouraged.) Furthermore, the book does not replace a halachic (Jewish law) authority, and anyone with questions should contact their local orthodox rabbi.

About the Author
Frederick Copleston grew up in England. He was raised in an Anglican home but converted to Catholicism while a student at Marlborough College. He later became a Jesuit and then pursued a career in academia. He studied and lectured at Heythrop College and wrote an eleven-volume History of Philosophy, which is highly respected. He also spent time teaching at Gregorian University in Rome and, after he retired, lectured at Santa Clara University in California. He was appointed a member of the British Academy in 1970. He is famouse for debating Betrand Russell over the existence of God in a 1948 BBC broadcast.

The Best Introduction to Philosophy Ever!

Copleston's series, "The History of Philosophy", is quite possibly the best introduction to the history of philosophical thought that has ever been published and certainly the best currently in print.

You will be hard pressed to find a better collection of solid philosophical surveys in one place. The beauty of the series is that Copleston has clearly done his research on each period and each thinker of Western philosophy.

I cannot recommend this series any more highly. It is a must-have collection for anyone who is a scholar (professional or casual) of philosophy, theology or any of the arts.

Volume 4: The Birth of the Modern

Volume I of this series covers the pre-Christian philosophies of Greece and Rome, while Volumes II and III are devoted to Medieval and Scholastic philosophers. (I have, for the moment, jumped over those last two).

Volumes IV, V, and VI cover "modern" philosophy from Descartes through Kant, and this volume (Volume IV) has a special treat at the beginning. There is a fascinating, well-written introduction which is actually an introduction to Volumes IV, V, and VI --- and is therefore a brilliant 62-page essay on everything from Descartes to Kant. Naturally, it's a bird's-eye overview, but it is the first thing I have ever read which actually made me feel I understood Kant! (When in college, I made a serious blunder and just went and bought "The Critique of Pure Reason" and sat down and tried to read it! :-) 30 pages later, I abandoned my foolish task with a bad headache!)

Volume IV covers Descartes, Pascal, Spinoza, and Leibniz. As usual, the discussion and illustrations are excellent.

Even better than the first book

After reading Vanguard of Hope, I was very curious about Owen. I recommend reading that book first, otherwise you might not understand some things. This book continues the story and ties up some loose ends. It is interesting hearing from a member of the Brigade. Owen has a completely different perspective than Hope did in the first book. I loved this book and how events and people tie together. Thought-provoking and intriguing, it kept me reading. The ending is satisfying, yet leaves it open enough for another book. I definitely recommend this series.

This story is a follow-up to "Vanguard Of Hope" and ties up many loose ends if you are curious about what happened to the rest of the characters in the first book. It introduces a few new ones, as well.
I found it to be well thought out and pieced together nicely. I refuse to comment on the storyline for I hate revealing 'spoilers' for prospective buyers.
With that said, I still must ask...what was the doctor's deceit? I had to ask the author before I understood what it was. A product of overwork on my part, I think. When she pointed it out to me...it was obvious. I recommend that you take the challenge and pick up a copy for yourself to see if you can figure it out.

After completing an electronic tax software program for my small business, and before hitting the "send" button, I wanted to be sure not to miss any deductions before filing. This book is an easy one hour read, with some humor, but does not add much to what the software program had. The first 26 pages of narrative were somewhat helpful, but the "475 tax deductions" section were just very brief summaries of what my tax software already offered. The home office mention did not include the latest IRS simplified home office deduction at all.

But there was not nearly enough pertaining to we quarterly-tax filers. Many of us don't have employees, so how about including tax tips for single-member LLC, quarterly-filing entrepreneurs (read: dog walkers) ?

Becoming ever more an invaluable resource...

I stumbled upon this book soon after I started my consulting business and I'm glad that I did. Had I not read this book, I would have lost thousands of dollars that are otherwise completely legal to claim - the IRS merely doesn't go shouting the deductions you might be entitled to; you have to research them. This book has helped me as an LLC, but it takes into account the major types of business entities and differentiates which can deduct what (Sole Proprietorship, LLC/LLP, C Corporation, & S Corporation).

If all of this sounds daunting to someone considering entering into business for themselves, this book gives sound advice as to how to protect yourself if an audit does come your way - the book simply does not advocate anything illegal; the tax deductions/credits are there for a reason & you should use them to their fullest extent.

Why I think this book will become ever more important (?). I think it will because this is the new economy that Americans are forced to operate within. If they cannot find full time employment, but can find a reasonable part-time position (or two), they can also mobilize their skill set as a business and offset their tax burden significantly. The IRS only requires that one show intent to make profit for a business to be valid and for appropriate deductions to count. If the American people can sever their liability into a company that operates in the red and have the option for pass through taxation (taxed only once; not two entities) on their income tax, then they can substantially reduce their tax obligations through their small business. This could turn a part-time salary of say $20k net into something more akin to $24-26K net, depending on the deductions one takes.

At minimum, the IRS expects start-ups to operate in the red for the first 3-5 years; this is why the LLC (among other reasons) has become so popular in the past 5-10 years. Even the middle-class that retains respectably high wages can reduce their tax burden, depending on what they are willing to capitalize their LLC with. A new car can be purchased by an LLC and amortized over a period of years; a home office space can be deducted from one's mortgage based on the relative amount of square footage it takes up within one's home; even books and magazines can be deducted in some instances. There is just so much money the government allows as deductions that can and will (as people learn) be used to reduce peoples' taxable incomes. This book explains a lot of those deductions in thorough detail and can help tremendously, particularly for the underemployed who have marketable skills that they can generate at least some profit from (and everybody has something they can do that another cannot).

This book is excellent for anyone who is going to, or is in the process of writing a thesis. In that it is written so that it is:
