Great Value!

I was very pleasantly surprised when I received this deck. My only goal to gain a few extra mnemonics to annotate into FA but found them to be one best/easiest introduction into bugs and drugs I have seen thus far (vs. CMMRS or Review for Micro/Immuno - Levinson, or lippincotts cards). There is a lot to be said for giving these bugs a face and a story, and the pictures though silly, help you remember even miniscule details.

Side by side I learned one bug from Micromneumics then the same bug from "Lippincott's Microcards -Harpavat".

I don't think there is any other way to come "fresh" into microbio, and memorize Hapravats cards as completely or as quickly then by using both decks concurrently! I will stick with Harpavat come boards, but getting through these cards without Microeconomics would have been more painful, would have taken a lot more time/effort, and I know that I would have retained far far less long term.

Excellent Step 1 Review

Real advantage is the corny pictures and puns to help remember the bugs. Overview cards for each class (e.g. Gram + cocci) are good for determining appropriate diagnostic orders for bugs. These cards are NOT for testing yourself since the name of the bug is on both sides of the card. Rather, these cards are for picture based memory of each bug based on clinical presentation.

Could not have made it through our micro class without these. As other reviews say, these can't be used like normal flashcards because the names of the organisms are on both sides. But the pictures and memory tricks are so helpful!

Exactly What I Needed

Excellent, relevant, up to date information on all things cancer. Easy and enjoyable to read. I'm finishing up a PSM in Biotechnology degree and am interning for a company researching and producing cancer vaccines. The updated section on immunotherapy was a great addition. Overall this book gives me the important information I need with references to other sources for further study.

Excellent resource!

Not a book to read cover to cover but instead something those who are involved with medical tourism have been needing - a well researched and reputable source of information. Unlike the "agenda" often just below the surface of many publications on the topic, this is objective and pretty complete. It is hard to remain current in such a fast changing industry and even with a 2012 publication date a few things have already changed - it would be great if this were an online subscription that was constantly updated but for a printed resource they don't come better than this one.

Should be titled "A History of Medical Tourism"

It doesnt matter if one is an investor, a hospital executive, or health professional or a facilitator, the history of medical tourism can be gathered from Wikipedia. To say that the book is authoritative is overstatement. I found it to be a dull read, nothing new, nothing novel.

To state that the book is "a reference work that will be used by patrons to begin and then facilitate their own searches for medical information" is puffery. I felt that the book is overpriced relative to its usefulness. It seemed as if it was written to be a library book or a vanity title.

Finally, it is my opinion that this book is by no means a "Reference Handbook" for the industry. If you feel you must buy it, buy a paperback copy you can sell later as a used book. You won't recover your time, but you may recover some of your out of pocket costs.

Can we trust this book?

The uncritical inclusion of the Cleveland Clinic and the Cancer Treatment Centers of America made me gasp! These two facilities are *infamous* for providing non-science-based practices, using quack practitioners (e.g. naturopaths, chiropractors), etc. For Pete's sake, with what standards were these and other facilities vetted?!

Fear of the Heathen Chinee

We get a glimpse into the political/racial climate of 19th century America through cartoons and illustrations of the period. The Chinese were seen either as heathens to be spit upon or superintelligent monsters threatening the livelyhood of "real" Americans. In light of our current political tensions with Mainland China and the scapegoating of Dr. Wen Ho Lee , we must ask ourselves, how much has really changed?

The yin and yan of Chinese in 19th century America

This book is a well researched and complied in the eyes of White America. They were welcomed to come to help as cheap labor in developing the West Coast. They contributed greatly in railroad building for the West commerce and development. The California mood changed with Denis Kearney's "Chinese must go" campaign rally. It ended with Congress 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act to prevent Chinese labors from coming. This book rounded up then current mainstream cartoons in viewing the Chinese.

Of interesting was one: a Chinese convert asked the White pastor why we can enter Kingdom of Heaven but not America? The reply was: Kingdom does not have Workman Party members! Another one was the pig-tailed Chinese screaming as Republicans and Democrats tightened their wooden grip on him, meaning Chinese being victimized and suffered by two party politics without political power. History repeats itself with Dr Wen Ho Lee, an accused felon with 59 charges for losing the crown jewel of rocket secret. It ended up with an unusual presiding Judge Parker apologizing to this "criminal".

This book showed the history of bias and discrimination against Chinese in 19th Century. In 2010 Congress issue a regret of over 2000 words in the tragic killings and lynchings and the 1882 Chinese Exclusion, but fall short of an apology. However, a new century brings about change for the better with Chinese-American governor, mayors in San Francisco and Oakland, members in Congress, university chancellors, scientists and Nobel Prize winners.

McClain takes a multifaceted, nuanced look at Japan's last four centuries. A professor of history at Brown University, McClain begins with the investiture of Tokugawa Ieyasu as shogun in 1603, then leads the reader from daimyo castles of the 17th and 18th centuries to the filthy barracks of mine workers in the 19th century, to the refined, "cultured houses" of the emerging urban middle class in the 20th century. Equally adept at describing religious and intellectual currents, economic development, political maneuverings and the special problems faced by women and marginalized groups like Koreans and the Ainu, McClain draws on the most current studies of Japanese history. Throughout, he is evenhanded in his choice of subject matter and source. He acknowledges the contributions of the industrial giants, but gives voice to the rural poor, factory workers and victims of industrial pollution. He describes the geopolitical realities that drove Japan to empire but also unflinchingly details the horrors of war. More than a mere description of how Japan became a leading nation of the 20th century, this is a story with room for the pronouncements of emperors, the poetry of Basho and the demands of labor leaders. A newcomer to the subject may be daunted at first by the sheer volume of information, but McClain soon puts the reader at ease with his mastery of the subject and his clear, precise prose. Some readers may wonder at his decision to overlook events such as the Ako incident in the chapters on the Tokugawa era or Aum Shinrikyo's gassing of the Tokyo subway in his discussion of contemporary Japan, but overall this is a remarkable achievement. 70 illus. not seen by PW.

McClain, professor of history at Brown University, has done an admirable job of tracking four centuries of Japanese history during which the nation emerged from feudal isolation and became a dominant power in East Asia. As McClain illustrates, the Japanese were never subjected to the indignities or the benefits of European imperialism. Thus, they were able to harvest what they deemed useful from the West while maintaining a remarkable degree of cultural solidarity. McClain's descriptions of the political changes during the Tokugawa era and the Meiji Restoration provide interesting perspectives, but McClain is at his best when he views Japan from the bottom up, eloquently illustrating how the daily lives of ordinary people gradually changed. This is a well-written, well-researched, and easily readable survey of the modern history of a fascinating and important nation--even more important now that Japanese nationalism is on the rise and a more assertive foreign policy is a likely by-product. A Synthetic Review of Japanese History...

The last few years have seen a spate of new histories covering the last three hundred years of Japanese history. From Herbert Bix's and John Dower's Pulitizer Prize-winning looks at Japan in the Twentieth Century to Marius Jansen and now James McClain's examinations of post-Sengoku ('Warring States') societal evolution, Japanese history is again attracting the attention of mainstream American readers.
McClain's new book takes us from Tokugawa Ieyasu's country-uniting victory at Sekigahara in 1600 (with a brief stop to quickly explain the millennium of history leading up to the battle) to Yoshiro Mori's cabinet of 2000-2001. It covers political history, governmental development, economic evolution, societal change, educational systems and intellectual debates through this entire span of time giving a very synthetic view of Japanese history.
If anything, McClain's book weighs in a bit more heavily on the economic and governmental development side of the equation, leaving political history to books that have covered it many times before. He shows all of modern Japanese history (defined as 1600 AD to the present) as dynamic, evolving and never quite fully under the control of any one person or group. A view that has gained a great deal of credence in modern years, it makes this history of Japan very timely.
Unsurprisingly, the past century of Japanese history takes up the lion's share of the book and he shows the tragic mistakes of the century in much the same way he showcases the triumphs. If any one thesis appears in his book, it is that Japan continues to evolve, hangs on to the past and appears to be at the cusp of a new societal evolution as the century ticks over. The first two are hardly news, and while the third may be a little controversial in some circles, these views merit reiteration in a historical retelling.
On the whole, McClain's book makes for a very necessary addition to the available reference works on Japanese history, especially given the economic and societal bent to his writing. His sources are impeccable and his work is conservative enough to stand as a good history while being just radical enough to push a few boundaries of intellectual thought about Japan. It doesn't hurt that the work is quite readable as well. If I ever teach a course on Japanese history, this book will serve as the core historical text.

The best history of modern Japan (1603 forward)...

McClain has fashioned a highly detailed, sophisticated, and complex history of Japan from 1603 to the present. The historiography is superb (he obviously is totally bilingual and is fluent in Japanese sources). The history is both descriptive (chronological, social, political, economic, family/personal) as well as analytic (how social structure affected the rise of industrial society, for example). The overall effect is to make Japanese history clear and comprehensible. The people of Japan stand out in distinct relief.
I was puzzled that the Boston Globe reviewer was much cooler toward this book than I think most readers are or will be. McClain's history will stand the test of time.

Comprehensive history since the 17th century.

If you are looking for an excellent resource on the history of Japan in the past 4 centuries, I recommend this book highly. It does an excellent job in tracing the tortuous path that wove from Japan's feudal fiefdom society to the current modern parliamentary democracy. In addition to the governmental and military matters that are generally covered, there is notable space dedicated to the arts and the contributions of women, peasants and others not normally found in history books. The maps and illustrations are adequate, and do help to support the text. Highly Recommended.

A small treasure

Swami Paramananda was a student of the great Swami Vivekananda who first brought the message of Vedanta to the U.S. He established two Vedanta Centers, one in Boston and one in L.A., that are still flourishing. All of Paramananda's writings have been spiritually sustaining for me and my family for decades and I could not praise them too highly. He is a central figure in the introduction of Indian philosophy into the U.S. and I highly recommend this book to all.

Good Read.

This was a good read. The research done on "war dog" behavior and interaction with a trainer (Ranger) is well-represented. Dog lovers will appreciate the special relationship and dynamic between Tucker and Kane as well as the insertion of the occasional thought process in Kane's mind. It's a bit anthropomorphic, but it strengthens the reader's connection with Kane. The plot explores some potential outcomes in our modern, digital world regarding possible warfare and digital infiltration using drones combined with advanced software technology. Scary, as it's not too far "out there".

Another enjoyable book of the bond of a special forces commando and his remarkable dog.

This is the second of the "Tucker Wayne/Kane" series, where the relationship between a former Special Forces commando and his dog are the central characters. I loved the first book, but this book may have gone a bit too far in terms of trying to "rope in" other characters. You do learn more about the capabilities of dogs in military/police situations, which I find amazing.

The central premise is how a power hungry CEO is using advanced drone technology to try to spark a war to provide access to valuable minerals to feed his corporate empire. Wayne and Kane are central to stopping this conspiracy, but they are also oddly left aside at times, as two "geeks" are crucial to sabotaging the drones. The geeks are charmingly eccentric, and thus likable enough, but Wayne and Kane should always be the central characters of the book, not being relegated to mere "muscle" in support of the geeks. Thus, this book gets only four stars from me, not the five stars I gave the first book.

An Action Novel, A Buddy Story and A Warning

First of all, I am prejudiced because I have enjoyed all of James Rollins books. When Rollins first wrote Bloodline, about Tucker, an Ex-Ranger and his Canine, it really got my attention.

Reading stories about Men and Women in jeopardy is one thing, reading about a Dog, especially from the dog's point-of-view is something altogether different.

As a dog owner and lover, I honestly felt emotional as Kane, the hero dog gets put in tight situations to save his human pal. Perhaps it is me, but putting a loyal dog in danger affects me far more than contrived human exploits.

The story, is all too plausible and shows where the world may be going if Patriots do not step forward.

The book, moves right along. It read quickly and I wish there was more but I will have to wait for Rollin's next novel featuring Tucker and Kane.

Better off?

An inevitable must for all new residents coming into the world of anaesthesia and medical technology.
Each new edition of the book gets more and more modern equipment oriented - losing out on the simplistic educational value of the older equipment. The gradual loss of the Non-rebreathing valves, from the second edition followed by Goldman vaporizer, EMO, OMV etc has reduced the level of 'ease of understanding' for fresh residents. Indeed, the focus on high tech is a drawback for practice of field/military/third world anaesthesia. There is something to be learnt from the old Ward, Ehrenwerth or even the Farman for youngsters.
Other than this, an excellent & comprehensive textbook. Could have done with a little more detail on advanced newer technologies being introduced.

Disappointed

I am sad that this will be the last volume by authors I have relied on since I began in anesthesia in 1981. This is my third purchase of one of their works but I must say that I am dissappointed. Much of the charm of earlier editions (I own 1st and 4th) seems to be missing and there seems to be a reliance on manufacturer's supplied illustrations. Explanations and diagrams seem to come directly from the manufactuer.

That being said I would still recommend this book to students (both SRNAs and Resident physcians)as a required text. This book will alow you to be competent to trouble shoot a system while waiting for BME to arrive,or for you to feel confident to swap a machine in the middle of a case. It gives you a familiarization of much adjunct equipment before you use it the first time. It apprises you of possible hazards and deals with evnvironmental issues in anesthetizing locations.

Not their best work, but have not seen anyone else consistently cover this topic over the span of their work. A replacement will be hard to find, and future practitioners will suffer with their retirement.

Necessary But Could Be So Much Better

Dorsch and Dorsch's Understanding Anesthesia Equipment is simply the most thorough book on anesthesia equipment out there that I am aware of. You will find most of the general basics of anesthesia equipment in Barash's Clinical Anesthesia and even more summary books like Stoelting's Basics of Anesthesia) and Morgan & Mikhail's Clinical Anesthesiology. Nevertheless, those books tend to not give you the ins-and-outs of all of the various equipment out there. Dorsch & Dorsch provide very detailed information ad nauseum. However, the endless black-and-white diagrams and black-and-white photos (though it appears very accurate) make the book very difficult to find the precise information that you are looking for. And the black-and-white diagrams tend to be much more difficult to understand than is necessary. For a book that has been through so many revisions and costs well upward of a hundred bucks, I would expect some color photos and some better constructed color diagrams.

The book does seem thorough, but is simply so much more difficult to use than it needs to be. Using Dorsch & Dorsch as a base text, we are strongly in need of a full revision aimed at formatting, photo, and diagram revisions.

The website included in the book offers a searchable text and a test bank. The search engine on the text is poor and very difficult to use. I find myself going to the chapter of interest and using a ctrl-f browser-based search of the page. The online quizzes are the exact same as is found at the end of each chapter. I have taken about half of the quizzes and have found errors in the online-based quiz bank in approximately half of those that I took. In need of some quality control. Nevertheless, I am appreciative of the online access to the text.
