This second edition has been designed to monitor the progress in develop ment over the past few years and to build on the information given in the first edition. It has been extensively revised and updated. My thanks go to all who have contributed to this work. D.F.W. May 1996 Preface to the first edition This book is the result of a group of development scientists feeling that there was an urgent need for a reference work that would assist chemists in understanding the science involved in the development of new products. The approach is to inform in a way that allows and encourages the reader to develop his or her own creativity in working with marketing colleagues on the introduction of new products. Organised on a product category basis, emphasis is placed on formulation, selection of raw materials, and the technology of producing the products discussed. Performance considerations, safety, product liability and all aspects of quality are covered. Regulations governing the production and sale of cosmetic products internationally are described, and sources for updated information provided. Throughout the book, reference is made to consumer pressure and environmental issues-concerns which the development scientist and his or her marketing counterpart ignore at their own, and their employer's peril. In recent years, many cosmetic fragrances and toiletry products have been converted from aerosols to mechanically press uri sed products or sprays, and these are described along with foam products such as hair conditioning mousses.

Islamic Geometric Design, by Eric Broug

Combines wide-ranging research with the author’s artistic skills to reveal the techniques used to create the patterns adorning buildings in the Islamic world

Islamic geometric designs are admired worldwide for their beauty and marvelous intricacy, yet they are seldom understood. In this handsomely illustrated volume, Eric Broug analyzes and explains these complex designs in their historical and physical context.

Broug shows how, over the centuries, craftsmen were able to adorn buildings with wonderful geometric patterns using the simplest of tools and without recourse to mathematical calculations. Design elements created from straight lines and circles were placed in grids and then repeated and varied to generate seemingly limitless arrays of breathtaking patterns.

Chapters are devoted to each of the main families of geometric design―fourfold, fivefold, and sixfold―and to the complex combined patterns. Readers can follow the design processes by which these patterns were created and even learn to reproduce and invent geometric patterns for themselves. Broug’s original drawings accompany photographs of mosques, madrasas, palaces, and tombs from the Islamic world, ranging from North Africa to Iran and Uzbekistan, and from the eighth to the nineteenth centuries. 800 illustrations in color and black and white

Exquisite Imagery
By Southern Rabbi
This book is amazing. I have had it for a couple weeks and find it hard to put down. It will appeal to anyone who loves Islamic art: the photographs are outstanding and it could be displayed on any coffee table with pride. Yet, for the artist and designer, it is a treasure trove of images and ideas. Broug meticulously analyzes every design, and there are instructions in the back of the book that show you how to recreate many of them.

I could also see this book (as well as Broug's "Islamic Geometric Patterns") being used by teachers: art teachers who want to introduce their students to Islamic design and math teachers who wish to bring geometry to life.

Monumental Resource
By David
Eric Broug improves on his second work on the subject of Islamic Art.

There are not many resources on this subject and you would do well with this one. It is beautifully bound, on display in my home in fact.

The pictures inside do something I have never seen done: they show an image as an example of Islamic Art and then disect it for the artist informing them how it is done.

Illuminating and important insight into this fading artform.

By Amazon Customer
Impressive book that's light years beyond his first. It's right up there with the few others that are both beautiful and useful, like Arabesques. Decorative Art in Morocco, Zillij: The Art of Morroccan Ceramics, The Minbar of Saladin: Reconstructing a Jewel of Islamic Art, The Topkapi Scroll -- Geometry and Ornament in Islamic Architecture (Sketchbooks & Albums), and Islamic Art and Architecture: The System of Geometric Design. And perhaps it's the first one to get, based on content and price.

Tuttle Learning Chinese Characters: (HSK Levels 1 -3) A Revolutionary New Way to Learn and Remember the 800 Most Basic Chinese Characters

This user–friendly book is aimed at helping students of Mandarin Chinese learn and remember Chinese characters.

At last—there is a truly effective and enjoyable way to learn Chinese characters! This book helps students to learn and remember both the meanings and the pronunciations of over 800 characters. This otherwise daunting task is made easier by the use of techniques based on the psychology of learning and memory. key principles include the use of visual imagery, the visualization of short "stories," and the systematic building up of more complicated characters from basic building blocks.

Although Learning Chinese Characters is primarily a book for serious learners of Mandarin Chinese, it can be used by anyone with an interest in Chinese characters, without any prior knowledge of Chinese. It can be used alongside (or after, or even before) a course in the Chinese language. All characters are simplified (as in mainland China) but traditional characters are also given, when available.

Key features:

  • Specially designed pictures and stories are used in a structured way to make the learning process more enjoyable and effective, reducing the need for rote learning to the absolute minimum.
  • The emphasis throughout is on learning and remembering the meanings and pronunciations of the characters. Tips are also included on learning techniques and how to avoid common problems.
  • Characters are introduced in a logical sequence, which also gives priority to learning the most common characters first.
  • Modern simplified characters are used, with pronunciations given in pinyin. Key information is given for each character, including radical, stroke–count, traditional form, compounds, and guidance on writing the character.

This is a practical guide with a clear, concise and appealing layout, and it is well–indexed with easy look–up methods. The 800 Chinese characters and 1,033 compounds specified for the original HSK Level A proficiency test are covered.

Don't use this book in isolation
By Brooklynnative
I have finally worked my through this entire book and the pages are thumb worn so I believe I can offer an informed review. At first I really liked it and felt it was helping me learn the Hanzi characters quickly. However, after now studying Chinese for over a year I would not recommend the approach I took. I tended to use this book in isolation, learning characters, writing them out, and using homemade flashcards, but not reading them in actual text. I think that that is a big mistake. I have found I need to see the characters in an actual text to really digest them. Perhaps if the student uses this book while learning new characters from a Chinese textbook that would be better, but I would advise strongly against just plowing through the book as I did, learning one character after another and thus do less reading. I find that you don't retain the Hanzi this way.

My second criticism is that the book's stories for the characters sometimes seem to determine how they define the word. The more common definitions are at times chosen for less commmon ones and many definitions are completely missing. It would be vastly better if all the words were used in sentence like Tuttle's flashcards are. Moreover, I think a big drawback of the book is that they don't sell accompanying flashcards that use the story. (I think Tuttle's flashcard series is very good but they certainly don't give you the stories used in this book.) Otherwise the student wastes a lot of time creating their own flashcards and mistakes in the writing of the Hanzi are inevitable for the beginner. Thus you are memorizing your own mistakes.

I guess the book may be good if combined with other materials in which the student is learning to read Chinese. However, I think if I were to do it over, I would skip this book and get a really good software program like Wenlin which has a great dictionary. This gives you all the meanings of the words, it gives you the words in context, and a history of how the Hanzi developed. Probably using Wenlin, Tuttle's flashcards, and this book would be a great way to start.

Finally there are a few typos in the book. I only started writing them down after I noticed a few so there are more.

Character 782A mistakenly identifies "Tian" as "slave."
Character 511: not sure what happend here. The top Hanzi is not "Ji" it's "Jiu" and the story is also wrong - not sure where they get "baseball" from?
Character 121 is pronounced "zhi" not "yi"
Character 561 - typo for the word "moon."
Character 779: story has a typo

The Ultimate Course in Chinese Characters!
By Sprachprofi
I so wish I had had this book when starting to learn Chinese! While studying on my own, I was fascinated with Chinese characters, but I never managed to retain them. During an immersion course in Beijing, I learned to memorize Chinese characters by rote, just writing them over and over again - it worked for the 6 weeks I was there since I had classes every day and used the characters a lot. However, back home and only studying Chinese once a week or so, I quickly forgot all but the most common ones again.

Then I stumbled upon James Heisig and his method for learning Kanji (Chinese-derived characters used in Japanese). It was enlightening! I actually remembered the characters, and I can still remember them several years later! Unfortunately many characters in his book aren't really useful when learning Chinese, or they may even teach you incorrectly due to the meanings having changed over time. But I had learned what method would work for people with an analytical Western mindset like me, people who don't have a good memory for pictures and who hate the dull, time-consuming and ineffective Eastern method of writing characters over and over again.

From then on, I used a similar method to learn new Chinese characters I'd encounter or old ones that refused to stick. It was tedious though. My incomplete knowledge of Chinese characters wouldn't let me see the most useful order in which to learn characters and their parts; wouldn't let me distinguish between really useful ones and obsolete ones, and so on. I also had trouble memorizing the pronunciation and especially the tone with each character.

The sample of Heisig for Chinese was a disappointment, as it didn't tackle these problems. The characters introduced are mostly the same as in the Japanese version, never mind their usefulness (or lack thereof) in Chinese, the book doesn't even mention the pronunciation of a character and after the first few lessons you're left alone to invent stories and links.

When I got this book, "Learning Chinese Characters", I immediately knew that I had found the answer to all those years of searching. This book is everything I would have wished for as a beginning student of Chinese and more:
- explanation of how Chinese characters work and how to write them, plus stroke order diagrams with each character
- introducing basic elements through pictures
- introducing more complex elements through short and memorable stories that combine the basic elements, sometimes also accompanied by an illustrating picture
- stories also remind you of the pronunciation, including a special mnemonic for the tone
- teaches the 800 most basic Chinese characters, with a focus on the ones necessary for the HSK Level A exam, and there's a story or picture for *every single character*. It doesn't leave you alone after the first few steps.
- the most useful characters (e. g. the ones for "to be", "I", "you", "good", and so on) are actually taught in the first few lessons, even though these are hard to teach and some books avoid them on purpose. This will be extremely useful for students using this book alongside a beginner's Chinese course.
- also teaches words if they can be formed using only characters that were already taught
- based on simplified characters, as these are the most common ones today, but equivalent traditional characters are given in brackets if different

Great job, authors! I haven't yet found anything worth complaining about, so my rating is 5 stars!

(Note: while the usage of particles is briefly explained whenever they come up, this book is not suitable to teach you grammar or conversation and it doesn't try to be. Use a regular course for that instead, or Chinesepod. These won't help you learn characters though, so you do need this extra book. Learning characters and learning the language have to be separate tasks in Chinese, though you can do them at the same time.

not for everyone (anyone?)
By Charles W. Strong
Although this book seems to please many reviewers, I think that it is too limited to be of great help to other serious learners. To begin with, the definitions are too limited and not really very accurate. To take two examples, their character 137 is xian1 which is defined as "ahead," but the central meanings are surely "first," "previous," and "before." "Ahead" is one of the meanings, but to single it out and present it all by itself is very misleading. Character 145 is dao4, which is defined as "way," and the little mnemonic story suggests that it is to be taken in the sense of "which way should you walk?" Again, the central meanings are surely "road" and "path."

A second fault is the method itself. People may be able to learn characters fairly rapidly this way, and that might help them on exams, but they may also find that they have to go through the whole song and dance each time they want to bring a character to mind. I once taught myself Morse code using short sentences, as in "Sam Said So" to remember that "S" (...) is three short sounds (one-syllable words in the mnemonic). It was very hard to build up any speed because I had to bring the mnemonic to mind in order to access the code. I'm afraid that this would work in much the same way. Brute force has something to recommend it, and that something is an immediate connection. Moreover, to put this method to use, one must spend a lot of time reading and learning little mnemonic stories (and ridiculous ones at that) that have no real relevance to Chinese.

I should also say that the "equations" they use to explain "composite" characters completely falsify the nature of the characters themselves. For example, the equation for li4 "stand" (which is their number 177) goes like this "lid + feet = stand." "Lid" is the colloquial name for radical 8; "feet" is their own invention; and "stand" is the colloquial name for radical 117, which is actually a pictograph of a standing man and needs no further clarification. (I have been referring to the traditional radical numbers here. In Chapter 24 they mention that they are using the system of 189 radicals--presumably the Xinhua system--and both "lid" and "stand" are a part of that system too. "Feet" is nowhere to be found.) To give just one more example, they say that number 195 xin1 (which they define as "spicy") "also means 'bitter' or 'acrid' and hence also "hardship." In fact, the character is a pictograph of an instrument used to mark the faces of prisoners and slaves, and the meaning "hardhsip" is basic. "Hot" (not really "spicy") is an extended meaning--not the reverse. Many of their explanations falsify the known etymology, which is very often more useful than their mnemonic stories.

One more point. No book that teaches someone to write the characters should present them in a Song typeface or other face with serifs and ornamental distortions. A Kai face that resembles Chinese writing should be used. This is more than a mere quibble.

Book is A-OK but assumes you know some server software
By David
Exactly what it says: Getting started with ownCloud. Arrived on time.

If you are a casual to advanced home geek be aware that this book assumes that you are up to speed on several other pieces of server software.

It's not the books fault that I didn't know the other software, but I took off one star to alert the casual user that this is actually an advanced project.

A Great Read for the Enterprise Admin or Novice User to setup an ownCloud Solution
By Ryan D
"Getting Started with ownCloud" is a great book for both the open source hobbyist as well the enterprise administrator. I got my hands on this book after having ownCloud up and running for my own personal use for about a year and half. I had been using all the basic features that anyone familiar with Linux (however this book covers both Windows and Linux Solutions) can get running in a couple of hours. However I never really got to the point that I really felt I had that solid install. Well, not any more.

"Getting Started with ownCloud" absolutely took my knowledge of the open source project to the next level. Most specifically I found the section on hardening my Apache install really helpful, and frankly corrected a couple of mistakes I had made with my original install.

For the Enterprise Administrator, the sections on unify authentication with LDAP, Load Balancing, and High Availability really give you the confidence that an ownCloud solution is viable, secure, and scalable solution for your organization. I have had a number of conversations within my own organization about rolling this out to our end users as a secure way to collaborate in a cloud environment. After reading this book, I will be able to build that environment as I'm able to articulate how this solution scales and maintains security at that enterprise level.

Armed with this book and a free download of ownCloud, you can mitigate the risks associated with going to a public shared cloud while reaping the benefits that a cloud service provides. No longer do you have to worry about shared disk, over taxed resources, and unknown outages. Instead you can run an ownCloud service on your own hardware and behind your own security all the while providing the functions and features that your users expect from the big name cloud file services. I really feel like ownCloud represents a new age in file sharing at the organization level, where the functions and features the end users expect can be delivered in a way that doesn't compromise the priorities that a highly secure organization demands.

That being said there were a few topics that I would have loved to have seen covered in this book. None of them are deal breakers and you can find additional information online through the various forums and tutorials.

- Extending the ownCloud solution to include an additional drive or disk resource. I think this is something that everyone comes across when you are just testing out the solution and find that it works well. If you don't want rebuild the solution then the simple answer to just add some disk and make ownCloud aware of the new resource.

- How to have ownCloud scan your data directory when you copy files over to the ownCloud solution from the literal file system. I often have to do this when I first build an ownCloud solution and need to migrate an existing file structure into the solution. The slower way to just drag and drop each section into the web interface (and manually create each directory) or let the ownCloud scan the directory of a client computer using the desktop client. But I don't think either of these solutions are ideal.

If you are looking for the specific details to maintain a scalable secure environment for your organization or simply trying to make your own home server a stable stronger file sharing cloud then this is a must read and I definitely recommend this book without hesitation.

this book is a real time saver to setup, admin and secure your ownCloud
By h.
This ownCloud book by Packt Pub is a brief start to setup an ownCloud instance quickly.
As the owncloud.org site already has a good documentation (compared to other projects), there is still space for more details to be explained. The book by Aditya Patawari is a good read and will help you with a clear structure to get up and running ownCloud not just quickly but with all required basics and background infos.

Examples of this book cover Ubuntu/Fedora and Windows differences where needed, for any OS X installation the Linux examples are a valid starting point, but you'd want consult the ownCloud site along with this book.

Client based setup (includes OS X) and ownCloud Admin Tools are described brief and shortly. I liked especially the structured configuration examples along with various chapters, highligh are the SQL/MySQL instructions and details chapter4 on "Securing your ownCloud" are all clearly outlined and workable. The book only has 110 pages but manages to explain all required knowledge to run ownCloud and leaves not much to desire.

Only weak spot in this Book would/could be for any Dev's looking into creating ownCloud applications, the dedicated chapter7 "ownCloud Application Development" seems a rather short intro to that topic, but helps to get the idea though to get started.

Bordering on useless
By Katherine L Bryant
This book is supposedly a reference for professional dog groomers. As one, I find it disappointing. The illustration quality is variable, and on one particular clip (the miniature schnauzer, I believe) there is a serious error in the clipping guidelines. Not enough angles of the dog pictures are shown for you to be able to discern the clipping pattern. Also, most dog groomers use modified forms of the show cuts on their customers' dogs. This book fails to describe or even mention these alternative clipping styles, which I think are not only invaluable to dog groomers but to laypersons as well who choose to groom at home.

A Useless Book for me
By A Customer
I am mainly interested in learning to groom and particularly interested in learning about clippers. This 416 page book has only 30 pages of general grooming information and it is superficial. It has less than 3 pages on clippers which was also superficial. If you already know how to groom and want information on specific breeds this book might be useful. For me it is totally useless.

illustrations
By Mink M. Mandir
this book has every breed that you'd ever come across at work. BUT... We don't like the short grooming discriptions and especially the pictures/illustrations. Don't get me wrong, Lynn Miller is a great artist. Our fellow employees have agreed that we'd much rather see a photogragh or better yet, a before and after photo of some more difficult breeds.

On the Good Ship Hollywood, by John Agar

For over 20 years, the name John Agar on a marquee meant action to moviegoers - from World War II land, sea and air battles, to the frontier west, to the new frontier of 1950s science fiction, where he stood fast against some of the era's most memorable movie monsters.

Agar's rise to fame was meteoric: During World War II, the $83-a-month buck sergeant met and later married "America's Sweetheart" Shirley Temple, and was soon offered a screen test and dramatic instruction by Hollywood mega-mogul David O. Selznick. He co-starred in his very first film, director John Ford's magnificent Fort Apache (1948), and parlayed that impressive debut role into a two-decade string of heroic leads. Steady work was the important thing to Agar, who easily alternated between A-pictures (Ford classics, Sands of Iwo Jima, more), drive-in favorites (Revenge of the Creature, Tarantula) and low-low-budget exploitation items.

A gracious, gentle man, Agar tells the bittersweet tale of his journey through life in this tribute volume, which also includes additional interview material and photos not only from his films but also his private life.

This is John's story.

Short but Excellent Bio of B Movie Icon
By Nick Howes
The star of four John Wayne/John Ford movies, as well as Revenge of the Creature, Tarantula, Mole People, and numerious B Westerns and scifi movies, actor John Agar (1921-2002) tells his story. Agar traces his childhood, then goes on to his unexpected chance start in acting when a guest at his wedding -- to grown up child star Shirley Temple -- invited him to get a screen test. Agar found he liked acting and his first role was the John Ford classic, Fort Apache, with John Wayne and even his wife, Shirley Temple, who appears as the love interest in what was probably her biggest adult role.

The marriage with Temple didn't last long and Agar declines to comment much on it. He remarried...his second wife appeared in Revenge as the lady screaming on a boat as the Creature dives into the ocean. Aside from marriage, Agar admits to having a problem with alcohol and occasionally falling off the wagon, but he accepts responsibility.

This is a short book, but Agar was suffering from emphysema when dictating it, so I'm sure that was a factor. It is buttressed by two Tom Weaver interviews (which in Weaver's fashion bring in a lot of fan-favorite detail about making the movies and not just the bio the author instead focuses on) and an article about Agar which brings in a few details he didn't cover. An excellent decision, especially since Weaver delves more into the making of the scifi and horror movies, adding substantially to Agar's own comments.

Despite its brevity, an excellent bio by a 1950s B movie icon.

Life in the Iron Hell

“In the neighboring furnace-buildings lay great heaps of the refuse from the ore after the pig-metal is run. Korl we call it here: a light, porous substance, of a delicate, waxen, flesh-colored tinge. Out of the blocks of this korl, Wolfe, in his off-hours from the furnace, had a habit of chipping and moulding figures,—hideous, fantastic enough, but sometimes strangely beautiful: even the mill-men saw that, while they jeered at him. It was a curious fancy in the man, almost a passion.” - Rebecca Harding Davis, Life in the Iron Mills

Life in the Iron Mills is one of the first American novels that depicts the precarious state of the impoverished working class. ‘Molly Wolfe’ is a member of this class working 12 hours a day, six days a week to earn a living. Because of his condition, he cannot develop his innate artistic talent. His cousin, Deborah tries to help him but the consequences are devastating.

By Dame Droiture
This text seems to be increasing in popularity among academics, and it does offer some interesting perspectives on the issue of mid-century (the 19th, that is) labor reform. You can view this text in its original format from Google books as well as on your kindle. (It is found in The Atlantic Monthly's 1861 collection, I think -- which Google has scanned.) I think it elicits a number of interpretive possibilities despite its short length, and is worth a read to those people who don't tire of conventional openings and a somewhat-tidy wrap-up. (Although I did read somewhere that Rebecca Harding Davis was forced by the AM publishers to alter some parts of her original text to make it more suitable for the audience.)

You will not, perhaps unfortunately, actually learn much about iron mills. This story is rather a type of conversion narrative that focuses on two characters' struggles in that particular "life." Those looking for a technical or otherwise informational book regarding mills/industry--or even working-class lifestyles--should look outside this one. But since this story is so short, it wouldn't hurt to look here *as well*.

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it"
By Roger
People have forgotten what life was like without labor unions. Anyone who has an opinion on labor unions, even those apathetic toward their cause, should read this book so as not to forget what happens when labor has no influence and robber barons have unfettered power .

Poverty as poetry
By Karl Janssen
When one thinks of socially conscious realism in American literature, what usually springs to mind is the heyday of the “muckrakers”of the early 20th century. Before famous authors like Jack London, Upton Sinclair, or Frank Norris turned their attention to societal ills, however, the trail had already been blazed by a host of earlier writers now largely forgotten by the American public. One such author was Rebecca Harding Davis, a prolific writer for social change. Her novella Life in the Iron Mills, originally published in the April 1861 edition of the Atlantic Monthly magazine, is now considered a pioneering work in American realism. In the long run, however, ground-breaking works don’t always translate into enduring works, and Life in the Iron Mills has not passed the century and a half since its publication entirely unscathed.

As the title indicates, Davis’s novella describes the living and working conditions of laborers employed at an iron mill somewhere in the American South. Hugh Wolfe is a “puddler” at the mill. Despite the back-breaking toil of his occupation, Hugh has the mind of a dreamer and the soul of an artist. He lives with his father and cousin Deborah, who also works in the mill. Deborah, a hunchback, is in love with Hugh, though he offers no indication of reciprocal feelings other than friendly or familial kindness. Both are Welsh immigrants, and their dialogue is transcribed in their native accent, which is sometimes hard to decipher with its sprinkling of apostrophes and ubiquitous pronoun “hur” [you]. One day when Deborah brings Hugh his lunch at the mill, the laborers are visited by the mill owner and some of his higher class colleagues. At first they observe the iron workers much as if they were watching animals in a zoo. Then, as a conversation develops between Hugh and the visitors, Hugh’s mind is opened to the idea that his life could possibly consist of more than just slaving in the mills day after day.

For today’s reader, the problem with Life in the Iron Mills is that the perspective that Davis offers into the lives of the working poor isn’t markedly different from that of these upper class visitors to the mill. Unlike later depictions of similar subject matter such as Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, Jack London’s “The Apostate,” or even Eugene O’Neill’s The Hairy Ape, the reader never feels like he’s amongst the workers, sharing their experience of filth and toil. Instead, it feels like we’re looking down from above, as if they were subjects in an experiment. This is heightened by the language that Davis uses, which is overly flowery and poetic for her topic. Though she talks a lot about smoke and ash and sweat, you never really feel it, because it’s all expressed in a prose style better suited to describing some sylvan grove. Though Davis may have turned the corner into realism by tackling such gritty subject matter, her writing stye is still very much rooted in the romanticism of the past. Her attempts to introduce religious imagery, offering up Hugh as a modern-day Christ, feel forced and overblown. The ending is as gratuitously drawn out as any melodramatic opera. As later realists would come to learn, who needs all these dramatic and linguistic flourishes when the drama of real life is enough?

Life in the Iron Mills may have shocked in its day, but today’s audience is likely to find it a bit tame. Davis was decades ahead of her time with this attempt at naturalism, but it’s still just an attempt, and a precursor of better things to come.

The World's Columbian Exposition included amazing exhibits of the results of women's activities -- in the arts, industry, science, politics and philanthropy. Most of these were housed in the Woman's Building, which was designed, decorated and administered entirely by women. Show Less

This is one of the most valuable books I know.
By Doris Weatherford
I am the author of a half-dozen books on American women, and THE FAIR WOMEN is one of the sources to which I return again and again. Jeanne Weimann did an absolutely masterful job, and the photos are incredible. It provides a terrific overview of the status of women in many places at the turn of the century, and it's full of bios of barely-known women. I would not sell my copy for any price.

The Story of a Milestone in Women's History
By Barbara J. Mitchell
Seems like I've been reading this book forever, but I did enjoy it. Otherwise I wouldn't have stuck with it when I came across parts that were guilty of too much information. I think Jeanne Madeline Weimann must share one of my faults. You do so much research for a book like this that it's tempting to include every little item. If anyone thinks of writing a paper about the Women's Building of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, this is an excellent source, bibliography and all.

The 1890s saw a social change in the U.S. for women, former slaves and their families, and for the upper classes as well. It was a time of bloomer girls, "typewriters" girls who typed in an office, and Susan B. Anthony still fighting for suffrage but Mrs. Stanton at home exhausted from the effort and not well. Artists such as Mary Cassatt were finding Europe much more open to their art than people who bought art here who insisted on more classical styles, certainly no nudity. There were a few female architects (one designed the Women's Building) and doctors and dentists, but very few.

The president of the commission in charge of the women's exhibitions at the fair was Bertha Palmer, wife of Potter Palmer who owned the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago. Bertha was the cream of Chicago society but found herself belittled by a visiting Spanish princess because she was "the wife of an innkeeper." Palmer worked harder than anyone to make the exhibition a success; she sincerely wanted to enlighten people to the fact that women are capable of great things and should be considered equal to men. On the other hand, at times she offended some commission members and exhibitors by her superior attitude. The long effort exhausted her and when the fair was over she pretty much washed her hands of what happened to everything as her husband took her on a year-long world tour.

The sad fact is that the fair buildings weren't built to be permanent so when the fair closed in the fall of 1893 all of the exhibitors took their paintings, crafts, etc. home and whatever was left was put in storage. Unfortunately, during that removal two enormous murals, one by Cassatt, were lost. Then two fires destroyed all evidence of the fair. A quadrangle of lawn at the University of Chicago, is all that remains of the Midway for instance, where the first ferris wheel ran during the fair. (The ferris wheel had cars rather than the seats used now. Each carried a dozen people.)

When I finally finished the book, I felt bereft like the people who worked so hard to put the fair on must have felt when it was suddenly just gone, like Brigadoon.
