The Only Woman in the Room: Why Science Is Still a Boys' Club, by Eileen Pollack

A bracingly honest exploration of why there are still so few women in the hard sciences, mathematics, engineering, and computer science

In 2005, when Lawrence Summers, then president of Harvard, asked why so few women, even today, achieve tenured positions in the hard sciences, Eileen Pollack set out to find the answer. A successful fiction writer, Pollack had grown up in the 1960s and ’70s dreaming of a career as a theoretical astrophysicist. Denied the chance to take advanced courses in science and math, she nonetheless made her way to Yale. There, despite finding herself far behind the men in her classes, she went on to graduate summa cum laude, with honors, as one of the university’s first two women to earn a bachelor of science degree in physics. And yet, isolated, lacking in confidence, starved for encouragement, she abandoned her ambition to become a physicist.

Years later, spurred by the suggestion that innate differences in scientific and mathematical aptitude might account for the dearth of tenured female faculty at Summer’s institution, Pollack thought back on her own experiences and wondered what, if anything, had changed in the intervening decades.

Based on six years interviewing her former teachers and classmates, as well as dozens of other women who had dropped out before completing their degrees in science or found their careers less rewarding than they had hoped, The Only Woman in the Room is a bracingly honest, no-holds-barred examination of the social, interpersonal, and institutional barriers confronting women—and minorities—in the STEM fields. This frankly personal and informed book reflects on women’s experiences in a way that simple data can’t, documenting not only the more blatant bias of another era but all the subtle disincentives women in the sciences still face.

The Only Woman in the Room shows us the struggles women in the sciences have been hesitant to admit, and provides hope for changing attitudes and behaviors in ways that could bring far more women into fields in which even today they remain seriously underrepresented.

Review
“Hard-hitting, difficult to read, and impossible to put down.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“Honest, readable, and brave.”
—Library Journal

“Offering an engrossing look at the barriers still facing women in science...Pollack draws attention to this important and vexing problem with a personal narrative, beautifully written and full of important insights on the changes needed to make those barriers crumble...Any young woman or man on the way to college to major in science will find great lessons in this book.”
—Washington Post

“Her memoir rings authentic, its lessons essential. A bitter pill to swallow but a vital addition to the important and frustratingly ongoing discussion about gender equity.”
—Poornima Apte, Booklist

“The Only Woman in the Room is absolutely brilliant—even a sleeping pill and head cold couldn’t stop me from reading it through the night.  Pollack’s story reveals so much—I want to give it to my children, my husband, my older sister (a biologist), and every physicist I know, perhaps with key passages underlined. And especially, young women in science: read this book!”
—Meg Urry, President of the American Astronomical Society, and former chair of the Department of Physics at Yale University

“With excruciating candor Eileen Pollack details how society's relentless message that girls lack the intrinsic aptitude for high-level math and physics leaves young women without the confidence to stay the course in the brutally competitive environment of high-powered science. This is a riveting, insider's-account of how unconscious biases make a mockery of meritocracy, why women's equality remains elusive, and why Larry Summers was so wrong.”
—Nancy Hopkins, Amgen Inc. Professor of Biology (emerita), Massachusetts Institute of Technology

“In Eileen Pollack’s vivid description of the issues facing women in science, I immediately saw the truth of what I have lived. Pollack is convincing in showing how the obstacles for women in the U.S. are erected by our culture. In the 1960’s my mother had to put up with exclusionary rules that kept her out of a career in science. You would think things might have gotten better for my generation, and for the current generation. But they have not. Eileen Pollack courageously and honestly examines her own life and shows us why.”
—Carol Greider, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and Daniel Nathans Professor and Chair of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Johns Hopkins University

“My remarks on women and science generated much heat—if they helped stimulate Eileen Pollack’s introspections and reflections, they shed light as well. I certainly understand many aspects of the issue better for reading Pollack’s work. We all want great opportunities for all, and as she demonstrates, the world has a long way to go.”
—Lawrence H. Summers, Charles W. Eliot University Professor and President Emeritus, Harvard University, and former Secretary of the Treasury

Even in the 1970s, the sexism I experienced was rarely obvious. I grew up in a privileged, loving home with few barriers that might prevent a bright, confident young woman from succeeding in whatever field she took it in her head to enter. All this led me to suspect that the reasons for the scarcity of female physicists must be subtle, and those reasons must lie buried in the psyches of the women who loved science and math but never completed their degrees or, like me, earned their degrees but left their fields. . . . By trying to understand why I didn’t become a physicist, I hoped to gain insights into why so many young women still fail to go on in science and math in the numbers their presence in high school classrooms and their scores on standardized tests
predict.

What I discovered shocked me. Although more young women major in physics at Yale than when I attended school there, those young women told me stories of the sexism they had encountered in junior high and high school that seemed even more troubling than what I had experienced: complaints about being belittled and teased by their classmates and teachers, worries about being perceived as unfeminine or uncool. . . . The same forces that caused me to feel isolated and unsure of myself at Yale continue to hem in young women today, acting like an invisible electrified field to discourage all but the thickest skinned from following their passion for science, a phenomenon that turns out to be less true in other countries, where women are perceived as being equally capable in science and math as men.

Right mission, wrong flag-bearer
By doubutsu
I care about the under-representation of women in STEM fields, and it pains me to give a book on this topic a low rating. Pollack expertly describes many of the subtle obstacles and pervasive barriers that deter women from STEM, but... These accounts were presented in the context of her own experiences, and I found many of her statements (and her own motivations) counterproductive to the stated mission of this book. Many things she said were outright insulting.

The first sign that something was wrong appeared in the book's preface:

"Even women who grow up to be feisty, successful feminists spend much of their adolescence obsessing about their appearance, romance, sex, and their popularity with female friends. ...girls may dumb them themselves down, hide or repress their interest in classes or activities their peers deem nerdy. They may develop crushes on their teachers and other older men, who don't see them as threatening and are all too happy to reciprocate their affection. A boy might pursue a subject because he respects the man who teaches it, but unless he is gay, he won't fall in love with that teacher, as so many young women do." (p. xx)

My reaction: WHAT?!

Her words reminded me of biochemist Tim Hunt's offensive statement that female scientists shouldn't work with male scientists because "You fall in love with them, they fall in love with you and when you criticize them, they cry." Pollack's statement implies not only that sexual attraction will create problems for female students of science, but that such problems are common. That will only deter male scientists from mentoring female students!

It only got worse as Pollack revealed again and again that romantic attraction motivated much of her scientific pursuits. While I appreciate her honesty, in this context honesty is damaging, especially because she portrayed her own motivates as commonplace instead of unique to her personality. Her story creates the impression that many women pursue science for male attention, and that romantic tension is a regular occurrence in interactions between male professors and female students. That is not only inaccurate (from my experience, anyway), it is incredibly counterproductive to the mission of getting more women in STEM fields.

This was such a theme in Pollack's story that I started a document to record unsettling and/or offensive quotes from the book. I nearly stopped reading altogether when I reached page 35, when Pollack reveals she had a romance with her high school debate teacher. I was disgusted. Three pages later, she describes how she visited Yale after receiving an offer of admission, and she decided to go there because she was attracted to a male physics professor after watching him lecture.

The last few chapters of the book depict solidarity among women who want to pursue STEM until they're discouraged or turned away, but this comes too late. Earlier in the book Pollack made it clear she disliked and felt competition with other women as a student. She had awe and respect only for men and wanted nothing to do with other women:

"But the women's movement seemed to mean women ended up spending more time with other women, and something called 'consciousness-raising groups,' and the last thing I wanted was to spend more time with women. If women ran the world, society would be less competitive. But I loved competing. How else could I prove to the brilliant, powerful men who rules the world but I was as smart and strong as they were?" (p. 21)

This passage was particularly offensive:

When describing the only other female physics major: "And as much as I enjoyed the sight of her shining, smiling face, I can't say we were friends. If a person's self-worth derives from being the only woman in the field, how much affection can she feel toward another woman who might challenge that claim to fame? Erika's decision to pursue a bachelor's of arts degree rather than the more demanding bachelor of science struck me as cheating. It was as if we had signed up to be marines, and here we were at boot camp, each wearing the same uniform, but Erika got to stay in the barracks and buff her nails while the rest of us jogged fifty miles in the rain." (p. 47)

Holy s***! Majoring in physics isn't easy, even if you're pursuing a B.A. instead of a B.S. The analogy she used--Erika buffing her nails, Pollack jogging fifty miles in the rain--was so insulting. Clearly Pollock thought very well of herself. Far from being a proponent of female representation in STEM, she wanted other women to abandon the field. She wanted to be the only woman in physics because it made her feel smart and special.

At this point, I was disgusted by Pollack, and I often paused my reading to vent to my husband whenever I encountered another offensive passage. But I kept reading, and it became more and more obvious that Pollack's pursuit of physics was at least partly motivated by a desire to attain men.

"Could anything be more exciting than carrying a pristine notebook embossed with 'Lux et veritas' to a lecture hall where I would finally begins the life I had been waiting eighteen years to start? My status as one of only two women in the auditorium struck me as less frightening than erotic; it was like going to a movie with 118 dates. I was even more excited when the professor turned out to be the same dark, bearded young man whose class I had visited the spring before." (p. 53)

"My new powers of understanding might have flowed from nothing more than Professor Zeller's voice murmuring seductively in my head: 'You can do it. Stick it out.'" (p. 58)

"My attraction to my professors kept me working to please them long after I might otherwise have given up." (p. 128)

Despite these criticisms, there were many things I did like about this book. Pollack describes the subtle ways women are discouraged from pursuing STEM, and the firsthand accounts of other women's struggles were great. I heartily agree with the message of this book, and more people need to know why we have too few female scientists. But at the same time, Pollack's own story could be counterproductive. Normally I appreciate honesty, but I wish she hadn't disclosed these things about herself. If readers assume her romantic motives are present in other women, it will exacerbate the problem.

In addition to her apparent disdain for other women (she only respected men's opinions), Pollack also derogates scientific disciplines that aren't physics. This passage angered me:

"As to why there are more female chemists then physicists, my hunch is most chemists aren't looking to explain the universe, only to produce a fabric that doesn't wrinkle or absorb odors, a vanilla pudding that tastes more vanilla-y, a bacterium that eats up oil." (p. 202)

She just insulted the ENTIRE FIELD OF CHEMISTRY! That is so offensive! As if physics is the only real science, the only one that truly requires intelligence and passion.

My last complaint about this book is how woefully it covers scientific research on gender disparity in STEM fields. (Ironic, isn't it?) There are hundreds of psychology experiments on this very issue. She briefly mentioned one study on stereotype threat (without describing the phenomenon of stereotype threat itself), but she completely ignored a vast literature whose inclusion would only bolster her arguments. For example, social psychologist Amanda Diekman has conducted terrific research on why some women avoid STEM and how to change this. (See: htt[...]) But you know what? I bet Pollack doesn't even consider psychology a science.

Again, I'm totally on board with the mission of this book, but I wish it had a different flag-bearer.

ANYONE WHO TEACHES SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING OR MATHEMATICS SHOULD READ THIS BOOK
By David Keymer
Two hundred some pages into this mixed memoir and study of the reasons why so few women students continue in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, Pollack cites a 2012 study by researchers at Yale who sent out comparable but not identical resumes, half under the name of John and half under the name of Jennifer, with letters of recommendation and supporting material, to 127 faculty members in physics, chemistry and biology at six major research institutions in the United States . The faculty members were asked to rate “John” or “Jennifer” on a sliding scale as to their estimate of the candidate’s competence, hireability and likeability and their perceived willingness to mentor him or her if he or she was struggling. On every scale except “likeability,” the “male” candidate significantly outscored the “female,” even though the CVs and supporting materials were equivalent. The professors were asked to suggest a salary range they would be willing to offer their candidate. “John” was offered an average starting salary of $30,238; Jennifer $26,508.

When Pollack reported on this study on a website, one writer, a scientist, wrote back that the results didn’t show gender bias but rather the scientists’ “objective” knowledge that women are, on the average, less able than men. This response, Pollack notes, is a textbook definition of bias: a decision made on gut feeling, or a few anecdotal examples, taking no notice of individual differences. Pollack writes that sentiments like this discourage promising women students from sticking it out in STEM fields. There’s also a culture that makes assumptions about masculine and feminine behavior, blatantly favors the former over the latter, and holds women accountable to a higher standard of behavior than boys both in their studies and their work. It is these subtle and not-so subtle discouragers, from grade school on that drive women out of science and into more “supportive” and “people-oriented” fields.

A large part of this book is autobiographical, where some readers might prefer hard data, but that’s beside the point. Telling her own story enriches personalizes her message. Pollack was one of the first two women at Yale to graduate with a bachelor of science degree in physics. By the time she graduated, she had published articles and presented at a professional (not graduate student) conference. She graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Yet she didn’t continue on in physics.

It took a while for her to figure out what she did want to do. Eventually she settled on writing. (The encouragement of novelist John Hersey helped.) Today she writes books and teaches writing at the University of Michigan and s he likes the life she leads. But she can’t help wonder if she might not also have liked the life she had dreamed of earlier, as a theoretical physicist, if one of her science teachers had encouraged her.

One difference between men and women STEM students, she notes, is that the men’s self-confidence is much stronger, as is their aggressiveness –they don’t need as much encouragement or mentoring. But it doesn’t mean men have more ability. Pollack describes about some of the programs in place now to encourage young women to continue in STEM fields but says we need an overhaul of attitudes to make the kind of difference we should be making. In the meantime, America continues to lose the better part of half its talent pool as women opt for less stressful and discouraging lives.

Every grade school, high school, college and university teacher of science or mathematics and every high school superintendent, principal, and guidance counselor should be required to read this book.

Now he has a proposal—marry him for thirty days and pocket a million dollars in the process. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement, he says. He needs a wife to keep his company and I need money—bad. No job, a pending eviction and a dependent sister have seen to that.

But I promised myself I'd only marry for love, that I wouldn't end up with a cheating ass like my father. I've got trust issues, yes, but they're sure as hell justified.

It’s only supposed to be a temporary arrangement, a business transaction, but I’m not so sure. Question is, can a relationship that started as a sham become something more, something... amazing?

No romance or courting but lots of foreplay.
By maloma
Wham, bam, thank you ma'am. This was a quickie in more ways than one. Jemmas and Archers wedding took less than a week to happen and only one day of actually ever seeing each other to come to an arrangement of receiving $1 million dollars in exchange for thirty days of marriage. WHAT? I guess billionares do it differently than normal people. This was a whirlwind without romance type of relationship that revolved around mind blowing sex. I never really got a true understanding of these characters personality and saw no development or conflict that warranted this story to be told. It needed an emotional spark to make the readers care about Archer, Jemma, her sister especially his mother, but the storylines and certain plots were introduced with no further mention. Great story and concept but fell short somehow of really engaging my emotions.
I received a copy for an honest review.

An offer that most of us would love to accept.

When Jemmea meets Archer at the wedding of her ex boyfriend, she had no idea how her life is about to change. She is working two jobs to support herself and her younger sister. He is a billionaire, single hottie. She had no idea who he is. After a short conversation she expects to never see him again. Fate brings them together after her car breakes down. He offer her a ride home and make her a offer. He is in need of a wife for 30 days, for this he will pay 1 million dollars. She is torn, but her financial situation help to make the choice easy. She loses her job, all her bills are 3mos past due. What each of them thought would be short term quickly changes. Easc of them have trust issues, but find they are falling in love. He has a company to save, a brother that is not trust worthy, a mother who thinks Jemmea is not good enough for him and a personal lawyer who wants him. She has no money, a father who is a serial husband (6 marriges), a sister who does not help and a mother who barley helps herself. Everything looks like these two are never going to be a real couple. There are secrets and mistrust, misunderstandings and possible jail for one of them. Will they end it in 30 days or can they overcome all and make it a real marriage? The only area that they have no problem is in the bed room or just about anywhere, the sex is hot. I received this ARC copy with the promise of a honest review and I can honestly say that this is a must read.

A Fun Fantasy
By ahhmericanwoman
I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

So honestly? I just couldn't see this story happening in Real Life. Maybe it's just me and I'm jaded, because never in my life have I just run into a billionaire, and had him offer me a million dollars to marry him for a month. But if you think of this as a fairy tale, (and after all, it IS fiction, right?) then it is a really fun story. Jemma is a very down to earth character, struggling to get by and being somewhat taken advantage of by her sister and her ex. Archer is a billionaire who really, really, REALLY likes sex. It was lust at first sight. Alot of really great scenes, enjoyable characters, but for some reason I just didn't feel the chemistry between these two. Somehow, Archer was just too nice to be real. It sure is a nice fantasy, though. With alot of very real editing errors.

Caught: Montreal's Modern Girls and the Law, 1869-1945 (Studies in Gender and History), by Tamara Myers

From the late nineteenth century to the Second World War, a 'young and modern' girl problem emerged in Montreal in the context of social and cultural turmoil. In Caught, Tamara Myers explores how the foundation and implementation of Quebec's juvenile justice system intersected with Montreal's modern girl. Using case files from the juvenile court and institutional records, this study aims to uncover the cultural practices that transformed modern girls into female delinquents.

From reform schools of the nineteenth century to the juvenile court era of the early twentieth, juvenile justice was a key disciplinary instrument used to maintain and uphold the subordination of adolescent girls. Caught exposes the attempts made by the juvenile justice system of the day to curb modern attitudes and behaviour; at the same time, it reveals the changing patterns of social and family interaction among adolescent girls. Myers also uncovers the evolving social construction of these young culprits - les jeunes filles modernes with their penchant for la vie legere - as generated by parents, church authorities, women's groups, social workers, the media, and juvenile justice agents. She illuminates the rich texture of these girls' public and private lives in the first half of the twentieth century, humanizing the stories of girls who were condemned for being too modern as they worked, played, and resisted the authority of parents, community, and the law.

Review
‘In Caught, Tamara Myers contributes an innovative, nuanced, and richly insightful study of Montreal’s jeunes filles modernes (modern girls)... Myers traces how the creation of juvenile courts considerably expanded state intervention into the lives of working-class girls and young women… An excellent work based on original research.’

Molecular Biology: Principles of Genome Function, by Nancy Craig, Orna Cohen-Fix, Rachel Green, Carol Greider, Gisela Storz, Cynthia Wolbe

Molecular Biology: Principles of Genome Function offers a fresh, distinctive approach to teaching one of today's most fascinating scientific subjects. Its perspective reflects the challenge of teaching a subject that is in many ways unrecognizable from the molecular biology of the 20th century--a discipline in which our understanding has advanced immeasurably, but about which many intriguing questions remain.

FEATURES:

* A focus on underlying principles--rather than an attempt to offer exhaustive detail--equips students with a robust conceptual framework to which they can add further details from the vast amount of scientific information available today.

* An emphasis on the commonalities that exist between bacteria, archae, and eukaryotes--along with coverage of their differences--provides an accurate depiction of our current understanding of the conserved nature of molecular biology and the variations that underpin biological diversity.

* An integration of key themes and concepts demonstrates how molecular phenomena like chromatin modification and RNA silencing have diverse impacts on genome function. It also helps students to appreciate molecular biology as a unified discipline, with many components and phenomena acting in concert.

* Clear demonstrations of the experimental basis of molecular biology (set off in the text in "Experimental Approach" panels) reflect the central importance of experimental evidence to furthering our understanding of molecular biology. These panels describe pieces of research that have been particularly valuable in elucidating different aspects of the discipline.

* Pedagogical features including full-color, custom-drawn artwork; end-of-chapter summaries; suggested readings grouped by topic; and an extensive glossary of key terms further enhance the text.

* An extensive Companion Website features additional materials for both instructors and students. For adopters of the text: figures from the book, available to download for use in lectures, and "Journal Club," suggested research papers and discussion questions linked to topics featured in the book. For students and instructors: "New and noteworthy"--key highlights from the field, updated for the start of each semester--and a library of three-dimensional models of key molecular structures featured in the book.

Review
"Concise and current. A great text for undergraduates." --Steve Wright, Carson Newman College

"Provides a current, comprehensive, and balanced approach on the topic of molecular biology. The organization of the topics, artwork, and presentation of the material are all very well done. The organization of the chapters allows the instructor to present the material at various levels of detail suitable to the background of the students." --Rey Sia, Brockport College

"Clearly summarizes the core information of contemporary molecular biology. Explanations are clear and straightforward, nicely balancing prokaryotic and eukaryotic material. The explosion of genomic information could overwhelm any student (or author), but the authors build a coherent framework for understanding molecular biology with its consistent focus on the regulation of gene expression, providing a unifying theme for the book." --Chris Cole, Morris University

"An engaging textbook that is both thorough and interesting; a rare thing today with textbooks that read like encyclopedias and dictionaries." --Doug Burks, Wilmington University

During postdoctoral work at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1980-1984, she studied the mechanism of bacteriophage lambda site-specific recombination. In 1984, she joined the faculty at the University of California San Francisco and began her studies of the transposition of the bacterial transposon Tn7. She spent a sabbatical in 1989-1990 with Allan Spradling at the Carnegie Institution of Embryology studying P element transposition in Drosophila. In 1991, she moved to The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, where she is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and a Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, and continues her studies on Tn7 transposition. Orna Cohen-Fix graduated from the Tel Aviv University, Israel in 1987 and received a PhD in biochemistry with Zvi Livneh at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, in 1994. After a post-doctoral fellowship at the Carnegie Institution of Washington with Doug Koshland she moved to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases where she is now a Senior Investigator. Her research focuses on two main topics: cell cycle regulation and nuclear architecture, using budding yeast as a model organism. Rachel Green graduated in chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1986 and then completed her doctoral work in biological chemistry in 1992 with Jack W Szostak at Harvard University studying catalytic RNA. She then did postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Harry F Noller at the University of California, Santa Cruz, studying the role played by the ribosomal RNAs in the function of the ribosome. She is currently a Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her work continues to focus on the mechanism of translation. Carol W Greider received a BA from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1983. In 1987, she received her PhD from the University of California at Berkeley where she and her advisor, Elizabeth Blackburn, discovered telomerase, the enzyme that maintains telomere length. Biology Student's Perspective: It's an okay textbook that gets the job done.
By APreMedStudent
Like the previous reviewers have written, this textbook is great because it is very informative and current, and it contains many figures for each chapter to summarize key concepts. Each chapter has main headings and several subheadings per each section that provide mini summaries for what concepts the following paragraphs will address, and this makes the textbook very easy to navigate through. The "Experimental Approach" sections are a great addition in that they provide information on recent investigations in the laboratory environment that pertain to the concepts discussed in the chapter.

That being said, this textbook does not earn a 5 star rating in my opinion because there are a number of typos and factual errors in some of the chapters. My professor occasionally must inform our class to make changes in the textbook for errors that are more than just typos. For example, in one chapter, it was talking about two genes in chromosome 11 and the descriptions of their functions were reversed. This kind of error is a little bothersome because it suggests that the editors were not knowledgeable enough on the concepts to catch the error.

Sleep quality - 0 stars. Content - 5 stars.

The biology course that used this book was a nightmare in terms of workload. We had to read about 100 pages of dense text per week. So if you are buying this book for a weed out class, you are going to hate this book. But in fairness, if I liked reading dense scientific books for fun, this book is content packed and explains concepts in extreme depth. Good luck!

Bought this for college

I used this for my introductory biology courses at Duke: Intro to Molecular Biology.

This book was beyond helpful with the material. The authors did a great job with being clear and explained everything extremely well. Some chapters may have been a little more verbose than necessary, but all in all one of the better textbooks I've ever used.

Enjoyed, but with some personal reservations.
By Sinfully
Tied Together is a friends-to-lovers, stand-alone MM romantic comedy. This is a sweet and steamy romance about two guys who become best-friends in high school - one who has embraced his sexuality with the help of his supportive family and one who experiences nothing but hatred and abuse at home and is struggling and in denial. Will the ties that have formed between both men stay strong and true or as life takes them through different stages will their bond be unable to withstand the bumpy road and trials and get severed?

Ryan Keller and Brandon Ford meet when they are both in high school. Ryan steps in and saves Brandon from an altercation with a school bully and the pair form a fast friendship. These two live lives that are worlds apart. Ryan is a golden boy who lives in a loving and supportive home. Letting his parents know that he is gay was not a hardship seeing that he got nothing from them but unconditional love. Brandon’s home life was vastly different. He lived in Spring Orchard Trailer Park and his world was filled with hate, abuse and neglect. He’s simply counting down the minutes until he finishes high school and can start college on a scholarship that he is working hard to obtain. While Ryan may be this cocky gay guy who seems to have the world at his beck and call, Brandon has learned to keep his head down and not entertain any notions that he may be gay just like his best friend.

This book is divided up into three parts and spans a time frame of about 15 years. We get to see the boys move on to college where Ryan continues to embrace life in all his gay splendor while secretly crushing on his best friend. Even though the pair have a couple encounters that indicate that Brandon may reciprocate Ryan’s feelings, Brandon is so conflicted over his sexuality and wants to remain firmly in the closet. What happens when Ryan pushes Brandon too far? Will their friendship turn into something more or will it all go up in flames?

This book is well written and very witty. I loved the humour and I feel like this author did a great job balancing the angst and the lighter side of things. I really loved the first two parts of the book and had this goofy smile on my face despite Brandon’s dismal circumstances. Then at the end of the second part Ryan makes a mistake that did not sit well with me. Frankly, it made me really dislike him…. a heck of a lot! What ensues in part three of the book is really what made this book turn into a three star rating for me instead of a higher one. While I do think it was a great idea to have both men spend some years apart and so forth, when they finally do encounter one another Brandon was a very different man. I just could not make sense of the fact that he had changed so much. His dominance especially did not make all that much sense to me especially because it was not consistent in the last part of the book. I also felt like Brandon accepted Ryan back into his life way too easily and quickly. These were just my personal issues with the book. By no means would I want to prevent someone from reading this book.

All in all, I did enjoy reading Tied Together. While this book may have not hit all the “wow” buttons for me, I would definitely pick up another book by Ms. Heller.

Funny and Full Of Feels!
By Keyanna Butler
5 RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING STAR for this funny, sweet, and emotional m/m romance. First of all, I'm going to let you know that from the very first chapter you are going to wonder where this book has been all of your life. This novel had the BEST opening to a novel I have ever read in my life. I was nervous, amused, and then downright laughing hysterically and I knew that I was going to FLOVE this book just because of that. Ryan and Brandon are incredible characters that I felt drawn to and related to immediately. With Ryan and his cocky but fun loving attitude and Brandon with his sweet disposition, it seemed they were two peas in a pod who needed each other and fed off of each other's energy. If there were ever two people meant to be is was these guys and though the road to their happily ever after was an aching slow burn that you couldn't wait to be ignited, once there you wanted them to burn down the entire neighborhood. I was so impressed with Heller' s character development and the endearing way she writes. She pulls you in and you are pretty much helpless. I have to say with absolute certainty that this is one of my favorite m/m romances this year and I recommend it strongly to anyone who wants a love story that's real

Everyone needs a best friend like Ryan
By EllAJ1
Sassy, sexy with a dash of Moxie. The vibrancy of this story is amazing. The sass and banter between all characters is snort laugh worthy. Yes I can admit I did that quit frequently. While it pained me to see the break between Ryan and Brandon it was an integral part of the story. Seeing how the characters grew over the years yet remained very much who they were was perfect. The inclusion of moxie made for fun quirky interactions, and her potty mouth hasn't changed. This story definitely brightened my day, let it brighten yours.
