INKLINGS colouring book

INKLINGS coloring book for adults, teens and children.

- It features 24 one sided fantasy art illustrations by artist Tanya Bond . Being single sided helps to make sure that the medium doesn't bleed onto the next design through the page. However I still recommend using a sheet of card under the page when you are colouring.

- Please note that createspace paper is medium to thin. If paper thickness is important to you please seek for artist edition of this book on etsy (which is more expensive).

- In this book you will find fairies, pixies & mermaids with their adorable companions - dragons, owls, cats, bunnies, birds, animals & other charming creatures.

- I recommend using prismacolor colored pencils, polychromos coloured pencils, Marco Raffine, Inktense. Use promarkers/copics/sharpies and other markers just for small touch ups as well as gel pens (use sheet of card under the page you are colouring)

Join "INKLINGS colouring club" group on facebook to show your coloured inklings and see what others are doing:) Enjoy your INKLINGS colouring adventure!

24 Hand-drawn Ethereal Designs of Fantasy Women with beautifully large eyes – printed on one side of the page
By iiiireader
[[VIDEOID:ff6a018d809a323d043f5e6f300ab038]]I really enjoy coloring fairies and other fantasy females, especially those with big, gorgeous eyes. Artist Tanya Bond has created a coloring book with 24 designs which fit the bill. The young women are generally accompanied by an animal of some sort (including cats, owls, frogs, snails, and many more.) Each of the designs have a title which describes the young woman and sets the stage for coloring.

This is an overview of what I found in the book as well as my experiences with coloring in it:

24 Hand-drawn Fantasy Designs
Printed on one side of thin, white non-perforated paper typical of CreateSpace publications
Designs do not merge into the binding area
Glue Binding
Plenty of room to cut pages out if you choose to do so
Consistent and dark printing
Alcohol and water based markers bleed through the page
Gel pens and India ink pens leave shadows on the back of the page
Coloring pencils work well, good color and blending but hard lead pencils leave dents on the back of the page

I'm having a lot of fun coloring these designs – choosing which colors I like best to give the right mood to the subject. I finished my first two pictures and am busy working on the next one.

Love!! Perfect for advanced work!

Beautiful artwork each one so different and lovely. In the picture you can see how much room the artist gives you to use your imagination. I'm still learning facial coloring techniques as this is a skill you might want with this book. "Beautiful faces, by Jane Davenport" really helps easily and in multiple medium's, guide in the facial coloring techniques. I highly recommend this book, I will be buying the second edition for sure.

I love Tanya's Inklings artwork and was so glad she decided to publish through Amazon with one sided pages. 24 beautiful pictures of the Inkling girls with various animals. Love the variety! I believe the reviewer that states the pictures are on each side is speaking of her original version of this book (which I also have), not the one here on Amazon. I've enclosed a pic of the 1st girl in the book that I've colored. Tons of fun! I'm already waiting on her upcoming new coloring book (Inklings 2)! Updated to add 3rd pic I colored.

Politics in Malaysia: The Malay DimensionFrom Routledge

Examining some of the most critical issues in Malaysian politics today, including human rights, law and democracy, gender and Islam, this book explores the contours of the contemporary landscape of Malaysian politics, focusing especially on politics among the majority ethnic Malay community.

In particular, the book explains why changes in patterns of political mobilization and the rhetoric of the dominant parties - particularly the PAS and UMNO - have been so limited, despite the overt and growing dissatisfaction shown by Malaysians with the state of their political system and the ability of these parties to represent their interests. It considers the recent history of events and discourses within Malaysian society, and UMNO and PAS, and goes on to analyze why important transitions have occurred in society yet political parties have not adapted themselves to these changes and remained reticent about instituting meaningful reforms involving these matters.

The Marriage Problem: How Our Culture Has Weakened Families, by James Q. Wilson

In a time of unity and common purpose, why does it still feel as though we are a nation divided in half? On one side, are those with solid families, well-paying jobs, safe homes, and a sound education. On the other are those who were raised by one parent, live in poor neighborhoods, and lack the skills and support needed to hold down a steady job and steer clear of crime. How did this come to pass? In is penetrating new study, esteemed commentator James Q. Wilson argues that the answer lies in the state of modern marriage.Once a reliable thread in the social fabric, marriage is now a convenient promise easily made and just as easily broken. Long taken for granted, it is now under attack, and the result is devastating. The signs are everywhere, with the increase in cohabitation, the proliferation of single and teenage parents, and the high divorce rate, all of which are eroding family life and damaging children's futures. In fact, statistics have shown that children of divorce and single parenthood are the ones who continually have higher rates of school dropout and teenage pregnancy, as well as a greater propensity for emotional problems, drug use, and criminal activity. Drawing on meticulous research and an acute interpretation of American history, Wilson takes aim at the sweeping forces that have slowly but surely stripped away the value of one of our most important institutions. The Marriage Problem reveals that the seeds of today's crisis were planted over many years by unlikely sources -- from the glittering ideals of the Enlightenment to the shameful practice of American slavery. The exaltation of individual rights has made unmarried cohabitation -- with its lack of ultimate responsibility to another -- the lifestyle of choice among younger people. And in today's inner cities, families continue to feel the impact of slavery, which taught mothers and children not to rely on the presence of fathers, creating an environment prone to abandonment. With precision and persuasiveness, Wilson exposes the patterns that have allowed us to degrade marriage and shows us how we can reclaim it.Incisive, intelligent, and thought-provoking, The Marriage Problem is a clarion call to rebuild the family, and society, by returning a solid marital structure to its core.

From Publishers Weekly
In this study of the implications of broken marriages, conservative social scientist Wilson (The Moral Sense) posits that there is a direct connection between Americans' tolerance for no-fault divorce and unmarried cohabitation, and the country's rising rates of childhood delinquency, teenage births, abuse and single-parent families. As such, Wilson's work is poised to attract fans of Judith Wallerstein.'s important The Unexpected Legacy of Divorce: A 25 Year Landmark Study (2000), which suggests that divorce has a much harsher effect on children than previously believed. But many of Wilson's points assume that divorce is de facto a bad thing ("As one popular movie made clear, there is no such thing as a happy divorce"); he refuses to acknowledge that society's attitudes may have shifted precisely because many people now believe that divorce often represents a promising solution rather than a bitter failure. Many readers will take issue with Wilson's claim that the demographics of African-American families (high instances of single motherhood; absent fathers) can be traced to the cultural practices of people in Africa and the West Indies. And in fact, the teen birth rate has fallen significantly in the past 10 years. Wilson's polemic will likely be embraced by readers who already share his traditional views on public policy and shunned by those who don't.

From Library Journal
While Maushart looks at what happens between husband and wife, Wilson (management, UCLA; government, Harvard) delves into the effect of "the marriage problem" on society. Wilson argues that the weakening of the family unit has been disastrous for our country and cites two reasons for this development: the individualism that arose following the Enlightenment and the consequences of slavery, which led to the emasculation of fathers and hence to single-parent households. Wilson makes his case with well-reasoned arguments and solid documentation, drawing on research that is both historical and international in scope to reinforce the important role family plays in child care. Wilson's cure: to restore the authority of marriage, for parents who are committed to each other and to their children can build a community and hence a nation that will flourish. Despite their contrasting themes, both books make a valuable contribution to the understanding of marriage in today's society and should find audience in public libraries. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Justly renowned for his gift for converting opaque sociology into lucid arguments, Wilson here ponders the cultural dynamics of America's remarkable retreat from wedlock. Though some have blamed the nation's epidemics of divorce and illegitimacy on the tumultuous1960s, Wilson probes much deeper. His careful scholarship uncovers the subtle ways in which ancient African kinship patterns still affect social life in the inner city and illuminates the legal traditions that turned eighteenth-century philosophizing into twentieth-century divorce statutes. But Wilson aims to explain not only how marriage has lost strength in modern America but also why that loss matters. With a raft of recent studies, he shows that once a society loses the anchorage of wedlock, riptides begin to pull entire communities into alienation and despair. Wilson particularly laments the suffering of children exposed to poverty and emotional confusion by the disintegration of their families. And it is precisely because the toll of family dissolution has run so high that Wilson challenges his readers to join in the search for ways to renew wedlock. That renewal, he makes clear, will require more than legislative finesse by shrewd lawmakers; it will require a profound shift in the entire culture. Wilson's sobering analysis will help spark the kind of public discussions that often presage such a shift. Bryce Christensen

Marriage in a sociological and historical context
By Hagios
"Two nations, between whom there is no intercourse and no sympathy." Benjamin Disraeli was speaking of the nations of the rich and the poor, but Wilson sees underlying causes. One nation is married, reasonably affluent, educated, and invests heavily in their children. The other nation is fatherless, poor, and does not invest in their children. On page 11 he quotes a study by William Galston, a former advisor to President Clinton. Galston shows that you only have to do three simple things to avoid being poor: finish high school, marry before having a child, and wait until age 20 to have a child. Only 8% of people who do these three things are poor, compared to 79% for those who do not.

The problems in the fatherless nation go beyond poverty. Children of single mothers are more likely to be delinquent; they are more likely drop out of school, become suspended and suffer from emotional problems. This is not from the lack of financial resources; the researchers Sara McLanahan and Gary Sandefur were able to show that the poverty that resulted from being a single mother only explained about half the difference in outcomes between children with single mothers and children with married parents. The results for cohabitation are not much better, particularly since cohabitating relationships typically end in less than two years, sometimes in marriage, but about as often in separation. Furthermore, the marriages that result from cohabitation are more likely to end in divorce.

Wilson develops the theory of sex ratios. When the ratio between men and women is high, men have to compete with each other for women, and women that bargaining power to secure monogamous relationships. But when the ratio is low, women have to compete for the limited supply. This results in women having to accept sex outside of marriage, polygamy (depending on the culture), and a general loosening of morals as women use their sexuality to increasingly "outbid" each other for the limited supply of men.

This explains a great deal of why single motherhood has devastated the black community in America; with many black men in jail the sex ratios are extremely low. But the research shows that sex ratios do not explain the full story. A whole host of research, from that of Guttantag and Secord, to Mark Fossett and Jill Keicolt, to James Wilson himself, show that the correlation between sex ratio and illegitimacy is stronger for blacks than it is for whites or Latinos. Wilson partly attributes this to slavery, and partly to the lingering effect of various African cultures, and makes a convincing case.

Wilson also takes on the "disappearing jobs" theory of the increase in black out of wedlock childbirths. It suffers from numerous flaws. Christopher Jencks looked at black men with steady jobs. 80% of them were married in 1960, but only 66% were in 1980. The difference is that men with jobs were less inclined to marry. Furthermore, Robert Lerman and others have shown that immigrants in the same urban neighborhoods have lower rates of illegitimacy despite living in the same neighborhoods. In some cases when there isn't work, they will take long bus rides to available work.

The conclusion is that the increase in out of wedlock childbirths is driven by two factors: welfare benefits and the loss of the social stigma for unwed mothers. Wilson defeats two main objections to the welfare theory. The first objection is that welfare benefits have been declining relative to inflation, but Robert Moffitt has shown that when you also account for other benefits besides welfare, such as Medicaid, food stamps and public housing, welfare benefits did keep up with inflation. Another objection to the welfare theory is that some states offer much higher welfare benefits despite having lower rates of out of wedlock childbirths. This objection fails because different states have different cultures. When you compare how people make decisions you find that welfare benefits do have an influence. On page 147 he cites many researchers making that point, ranging from Mark Rosenzweig, the economists Jeff Grogger and Stephen Bronars, and by the 1998 research of Robert Moffitt (not to be confused with his earlier 1992 research on the subject).

Finally, Wilson spends much of the book putting marriage in both a sociological and historical context. This review is already long so I'll just touch on it briefly. Wilson notes that critics of monogamous marriage are correct when they point out that our current "white dress, vows, big ceremony" notion of marriage is a fairly recent invention. But they miss the larger point; marriage is generally most strongly formalized in societies in which the ties between parents and their children are fragile. In more robust societies with strong senses of social obligation, cohabitation and common law marriage produce the same results as our formalized marriages: a tangible claim on the father for help with both raising the children and supporting the mother.

I would also recommend Civil Rights: Rhetoric or Reality by Thomas Sowell, who shows the importance of culture, for example, African Americans of West Indian descent made 94% as much as whites back in 1984, compared to 62% for African American's as a whole.

Why marriage matters
By Bill Muehlenberg
Marriage is a problem, argues Wilson. That is, it is in a problematic state. Marriage is good for societies, for individuals, and especially for children. But the Western world is quickly moving away from marriage. As a result a host of problems are arising.

Wilson begins with what are now well-known and depressing figures. Any other type of relationship but marriage is bad for the adults and especially bad for the kids. Take cohabitation, for example. People who cohabit before marriage short-change themselves and their children in numerous ways. First, the average duration of a cohabiting couple is 1.3 years. Cohabiting couples are far more likely to divorce when they do marry than couples who did not cohabit before marriage.

Moreover, children of cohabiting couples are likely to be as poor as children in single-parent families. And in England, children of cohabiting couples are twenty times more likely to suffer child abuse than kids from married couples.

Or consider step-families. The homicide rate for children in such families is seventy times higher than for those living with both biological parents. Child abuse is also much higher in these families. The evidence merely confirms what common sense has always told us: "people care for their own children more than for those of others".

Wilson then examines the social, cultural and biological/evolutionary evidence for why marriage and families exist. In addition, the historical development, and recent decline, of marriage and family are discussed. While a combination of nature and nurture, biology and culture, made marriage a civil necessity, the doctrines of the Enlightenment sowed the seeds of its demise.

Beginning with the Enlightenment, marriage began to be seen less as a sacrament and more as a contract. Today it is seen less as a contract and more as an arrangement. Individual rights and freedoms, the product of modernism, have undermined the rationale for and the basis of marriage. Thus it is surprising that people bother to get married at all in the modern, secular, individualistic West.

Wilson also examines how government policies, especially economic policies, impact on the family. He acknowledges that many policies have a negative impact on families, but questions to what extent government policies can in fact help families. While marriage is in the best interests of children, there are limits as to how much a government can do to encourage marriage. After examining a number of federal programs aimed at doing just that, Wilson concludes: "getting single mums to marry is harder than keeping married couples together".

Thus while financial incentives from the government can help to an extent, they are no panacea. Indeed, the cultural incentives, or disincentives, to marriage, may be more crucial. And these cultural trends may be harder to overcome. A concern for relationships has replaced a concern for marriage. This is the result of larger cultural shifts such as the Enlightenment, with its attendant rugged individualism, rampant secularism and often amoral utilitarianism. How these forces can be offset is no easy matter. Interestingly, Wilson sees a revival of religion as a major factor if we are to see cultural trends reversed.

While Wilson himself displays no deep religious convictions, he does acknowledge the role religion has played in the past both to curtail some of these forces, and to under-gird and affirm marriage and family. One way religion does this is by acknowledging the value of stigma and shame. Our society, says Wilson, "has managed to stigmatize stigma so much so that we are reluctant to blame people for any act". Thus our no-fault divorce laws, for example. No one wants to take responsibility for their actions anymore, and our laws are beginning to reflect that.

Wilson argues that we somehow need to recover the positive nature of stigma and shame. We need to recognize that not all behaviors are in society's best interests. Illegitimacy, for example, is one of them. Forty years ago a mother who brought a child into wedlock had a clear understanding that this was not something to boast about. Today no such moral compunction exists. But it should.

Perhaps part of the way to make for a better future is to recapture an accurate sense of the past. Marriage and family are not dead yet, but have taken a severe hammering. We need to redouble our efforts to affirm and protect these most vital of institutions. This book is an important component in such a defense.

An Excellent Book!
By A Customer
Wilson's excellent book sumarizes the findings of virtually all of the factual studies of the consequences of divorce and illigitmacy for children and for American society done over the past decade and more.
Those reviewers who have traduced the author are precisely the kind of ultra feminist ideologues who for over a decade have been denying the facts, ignoring the consequences, touting the tired old 60's rhetoric of rights without responsibilities, continuing to insist against all the empirical evidence that divorce is good for the children, and, all in all, burying their heads in rhetorical sand because the reality of the world they have made doesn't square with the prognostications of their ideology.

Learned Pigs and Fireproof Women, by Ricky Jay

A cult classic and a work of remarkable scholarship restored to print.

Ricky Jay is one of the world's great sleight-of-hand artists. He is also a most unusual and talented scholar, specializing in the bizarre, exotic, and fantastic side of the human species. The youngest magician to have appeared on television, Jay has become well known for his astonishing stage show as well as for his cameos in such movies as Glengarry Glen Ross and, most recently, Boogie Nights.

Jay's unparalleled collection of books, posters, photographs, programs, broadsides, and, most important, data about unjustifiably forgotten entertainers all over the world made this unique book possible. An investigation into the inspired world of sideshows, circuses, and singularly talented performers, Learned Pigs and Fireproof Women is history of the most unusual--and irresistible--sort.

From Publishers Weekly
A magician himself, the author offers a history of magicians and other performers, including animals trained to do arithmetic and limbless people able to play musical instruments. PW stated the dozens of illustrations alone "are worth the price of the book."

From School Library Journal
YA A historical compendium of the world's most bizarre and outrageous entertainers by one of the world's great sleight-of-hand artists. Reaching back into history as early as the 16th Century, Jay introduces readers to daredevils, mind readers, talented animals and their trainers, sword swallowers, and other wonders of the past. Some have been geniuses, others charlatans, but all have captured the imagination of their public. Although Jay handles the material unevenly, readers should leave the book with awe of the inventive genius of man, and of the incredible stamina of the human body. This is a delightful book for YAs who have a penchant for the extraordinary. It is full of colorful illustrations, posters, and billboards of yesteryear. Anne Johnson, formerly at St. John's School, Houston

From Library Journal
Beginning with a somewhat confusing title, this account by magician Jay of unusual entertainers from the 17th century to the present attempts a monumental task. In these pages are an assortment of spritualists, freaks, talking horses, mind readers, sword swallowers, and people who walk through fire. The author has a keen sense of humor about his subjects and is ambivalent in his attempt to separate fact from fiction. Clearly he finds much to admire in some of the lovable charlatans who have entertained audiences throughout the world. There are numerous original playbills, advertisements, drawings, and photographs interspersed throughout the text of this unique and colorful book. For larger collections. a catalogue of the amazing
By Al Kihano
You've come to the right place. Buy _Learned Pigs and Fireproof Women_ if you want amazing stories, incredible histories, unbelievable accounts of some of the best acts of the last few centuries.
If I didn't know Ricky Jay's fine reputation as a magic historian, I'd think this book was a joke. The people and acts described are too outlandish, too impressive to be true. But I trust Jay to strike awe into me, and he does so repeatedly and without fail in this book.
The book's illustrations and photographs are marvelous supplements to Jay's smoothly written histories of performers--memory artists, dwarf magicians without arms or legs, women who walk into ovens. This is the quintessential introduction to this bizarre world.

Ricky Jay is having a lot of freaky fun
By bensmomma
In Learned Pigs and Fireproof Women, Ricky Jay takes on the history of oddball performers: men who claimed to cram their entire bodies into quart jars, armless ladies who could paint miniatures holding a brush between their teeth, gentlemen whose specialty was to enter large ovens accompanied by raw meat and exit (unharmed) with fully-cooked steaks, as well as mind readers of all sorts and species (human, pig, and horse).
Organized into chapters by skill by oddball skill, Jay is sometimes able to document such performers back into the 1700s by tracking newspaper reports, handbills, etc., many of which are reproduced in color plates and black-and-white photographs.
Ricky Jay occupies an engaging hole in intellectual space between enthusiast and academic. He is comprehensive in the extreme, but his writing style is anecdotal and he does not go for any elaborate sociological explanation of why such performers exist or what they `mean' to society. He just wants you to have fun, and perhaps to freak you out just a wee bit.
The book is also very nicely designed; its large wide pages lie flat and there are loads of remarkable illustrations. Definitely worth a look!

Ricky Jay, Master Magician, Master Writer
By C2015
As a magician and card wielder Ricky Jay is fascinating to watch as well as listen to. As a writer Mr. Jay also brings his own fascination at the work of others to play and writes a truly well-written, very interesting and enlightening book about the arcane world of many sometimes downright odd entertainers.
Thorough in his presentation of details Mr. Jay's book is well-researched and his appreciation and awe for these unique people makes us quite enthralled as we read page after page about performers such as Le Petomaine, with his unusual ability to produce sounds of musical quality from a most unusual source on his body.
Ricky Jay, besides being fascinating to watch, is also fascinating to read.

Advanced Calculus : Revised Edition, by Shlomo Zvi Sternberg, Lynn Harold Loomis

An authorised reissue of the long out of print classic textbook, Advanced Calculus by the late Dr Lynn Loomis and Dr Shlomo Sternberg both of Harvard University has been a revered but hard to find textbook for the advanced calculus course for decades.

This book is based on an honors course in advanced calculus that the authors gave in the 1960's. The foundational material, presented in the unstarred sections of Chapters 1 through 11, was normally covered, but different applications of this basic material were stressed from year to year, and the book therefore contains more material than was covered in any one year. It can accordingly be used (with omissions) as a text for a year's course in advanced calculus, or as a text for a three-semester introduction to analysis.

The prerequisites are a good grounding in the calculus of one variable from a mathematically rigorous point of view, together with some acquaintance with linear algebra. The reader should be familiar with limit and continuity type arguments and have a certain amount of mathematical sophistication. As possible introductory texts, we mention Differential and Integral Calculus by R Courant, Calculus by T Apostol, Calculus by M Spivak, and Pure Mathematics by G Hardy. The reader should also have some experience with partial derivatives.

In overall plan the book divides roughly into a first half which develops the calculus (principally the differential calculus) in the setting of normed vector spaces, and a second half which deals with the calculus of differentiable manifolds.

Readership: Undergraduates in mathematics.

In my opinion, this is the best book on the calculus of product spaces and differentiable manifolds. The exposition is deep, elegant, even magisterial; at the same time, it's unstintingly precise and clear without becoming boring.

Why add another 5-start review to those already here? Because I believe this book should be back in print and used more in courses, and to these ends I wanted to explain what differentiates it from its competitors (Spivak's "Calculus on Manifolds" and Munkres's "Analysis on Manifolds".)

The approach is resolutely modern and "high-tech" but always very accessible and without arbitrary generalization (no modules over commutative rings here, just real and complex vector spaces). Unlike Munkres or Spivak, L&S don't hesitate to develop machinery even when it's not strictly needed to rush headlong to Stokes' Theorem. This makes it a bit hard to use as a supplement unless you are willing to learn the relevant (multi-)linear algebra, Banach space theory, &c. On the other hand, you'll need this stuff to study more mathematics anyway, and it's more complete and useful as a reference once you can read it. In addition to the titular material and many interesting applications, half of basic linear algebra and single-variable calculus is packed in here. I can see instructors being intimidated by the page count (567, vs. 380 for Munkres), but much of it (metric spaces, linear algebra) would be review, albeit high-tech, for many audiences or is optional (mechanics, differential equations).

Chapter 0 is an elegant review of some basics of sets and functions, with a good treatment of duality and indexed sets and products.

Chapters 1 and 2 (together with chapter 5) constitute an excellent linear algebra course (but no canonical forms). While technically requiring no prerequisites (single-variable calculus is needed in a few of the plentiful exercises), the treatment is sophisticated: universal properties and categories are only hinted at, but there is a strong focus on product and direct sum spaces and their associated projection and injection maps, spaces of linear maps, dual spaces, bilinearity, and other "sophisticated" ideas. Throughout the book, but in these chapters especially, the authors are almost heroically careful to avoid any kind of carelessness. They point out when trivial injections are needed because the codomain is part of the data carried by a function, explain what an ordered basis really is, and so on. Occasionally, they omit this care initially before returning to highlight and repair their sloppiness or inviting the student to do so.

In chapter 3, the authors review limits on the real line in order to motivate the introduction of normed linear spaces. After proving (or leaving as exercises) all the standard limit theorems in this context, the authors introduce the notion of "infinitesimals", which, in contrast to those in non-standard (or non-rigorous) analysis books, are defined as (equivalence classes of) functions with certain limiting behaviour at a point. In proving results (the "Oo-theorem") about these functions, the authors "encapsulate" several "epsilon-delta"-type arguments into conveniently re-usable forms. The differential of a function is defined as a bounded linear map such that the remainder term is "little-o". Standard theorems about the differential are now trivial - the composite-function rule is proved in six easy equalities and one sentence (Munkres, by contrast, essentially inlines parts of the "Oo-theorem" into his proof). The authors study directional derivatives and "partial differentials" in arbitrary normed spaces and product spaces before specializing to R^n. Chapter 3 concludes with applications - the general Taylor formula, maximization, Lagrange multipliers, and the calculus of variations.

Chapter 4 is aptly titled "Compactness and Completeness". After a complete review of metric spaces, we return to spaces with a norm, and the rest of the chapter is a tour de force in the striking (and essential!) applications of completeness in this setting: the usual theorems on power series, now proved for arbitrary Banach algebras; the contraction mapping theorem and, as a consequence, the implicit-function theorem; the construction of the Riemann integral (into an arbitrary Banach space) obtained by completing the space of step functions; the fundamental theorem of calculus; some basics of weak methods ...

Chapter 5 covers inner-product spaces and self-adjoint operators. The treatment here is more sophisticated than in elementary linear algebra books since the authors, when possible, don't assume that all spaces are finite-dimensional.

Chapter 6 is a rigorous short course on differential equations. Only the fundamental theorem is needed for the rest of the book, but the technical machinery available at this point is substantially more than in today's elementary ODE texts, and would be a shame to waste.

Chapter 7 is a brief but sophisticated treatment of multilinear algebra. As is common outside graduate algebra texts, the tensor product is defined in terms of linear functionals rather than constructed abstractly.

Chapter 8 is a (mercifully brief) treatment of Riemann integration in R^n. Instead of defining the integral via Darboux sums, L&S define (Jordan) content of sets in R^n, and define integrable functions via approximation, in the spirit of Chapter 4. This highlights the similarity between the Riemann integral and Lebesgue's theory (which isn't covered). There's an optional extended exercise on the Fourier transform.

Chapters 9-11 are the heart of the book: at long last, we define differentiable (Banach!) manifolds. This is done "abstractly", in contrast to Spivak, where manifolds are a subset of R^n, and Munkres, where the more general definition appears only in the prologue ("Life outside R^n"). The content is "standard": flows, vector fields, Lie derivatives, Riemannian metrics, integration, Stokes' Theorem and corollaries. The last two chapters (12,13) are optional, and cover potential theory and classical mechanics (specialties of the respective authors). Covering these in a year-long course would be virtually impossible.

My only complaint is the exercises: chapters 7 and 9-11, which are really crucial, have too few, and those in the earlier chapters, while plentiful, relevant, and insightful, are mostly a bit too easy. Regardless: a desert island text. ℵ_0 stars.

Modest title
By Bernardo Vargas
As Spivak's "Calculus on Manifolds", this book is labeled with a very modest title. It should be something as "All you wanted to know about analysis on manifolds but were afraid to ask".
This book is a must-reading for the analyst. It covers everything from the most basic vector space concepts up to the fundamental theorems of classical mechanics, running through multivariate calculus, exterior calculus, integration of forms, and many topics more, always keeping a very modern and rigorous style.
The undergraduate may find it a little difficult, but the effort is worth it. For the graduate student and the working mathematician it is an almost-daily reference.

Beautiful book on vector spaces calculus
By A Customer
This book is an amazing work of general vector spaces calculus. From the beginning explaining the foundations of vector spaces up to the classical mechanics mathematical theory (which subject it devotes a seventy-page chapter), treating such things as calculus on manifolds, this book plenty of good exercises has a strong and rigorous text on theory and, along with Michael Spivak's Calculus, is among the finest books ever written on the subject.

Written for the undergraduate criminal procedure course, Criminal Procedure Law: Police Issues and the Supreme Court presents the criminal procedural process in a logical progression, from police identification and the initial investigation through the arrest and pretrial process. Every step of the process is important: how an officer handles an initial stop, frisk, search, and how subsequent questioning will be scrutinized later in court. Whether evidence is admissible depends greatly on how the officers gathered it and how they respond to the persons that they investigate. Ideal for criminal justice students and practitioners, this text presents the subject in a clear, easy-to-read format with practical contemporary examples and applications of important constitutional criminal procedure principles. By presenting case abstracts on, and discussions of important U.S. Supreme Court cases pertaining to criminal processes and policing, Criminal Procedure Law: Police Issues and the Supreme Court provides an in-depth analysis of critical issues on criminal procedure. Effie: The Passionate Lives of Effie Gray, John Ruskin and John Everett Millais, by Suzanne Fagence Cooper

Effie Gray, a beautiful and intelligent young socialite, rattled the foundations of England's Victorian age. Married at nineteen to John Ruskin, the leading art critic of the time, she found herself trapped in a loveless, unconsummated union after Ruskin rejected her on their wedding night. On a trip to Scotland she met John Everett Millais, Ruskin's protégé, and fell passionately in love with him. In a daring act, Effie left Ruskin, had their marriage annulled and entered into a long, happy marriage with Millais. Suzanne Fagence Cooper has gained exclusive access to Effie's previously unseen letters and diaries to tell the complete story of this scandalous love triangle. In Cooper's hands, this passionate love story also becomes an important new look at the work of both Ruskin and Millais with Effie emerging as a key figure in their artistic development. Effie is a heartbreakingly beautiful book about three lives passionately entwined with some of the greatest paintings of the pre-Raphaelite period.

Review

“Suzanne Fagence Cooper's meticulously researched and yet touchingly personal memoir of Effie Gray is a joy to read. We know so much about Ruskin and Millais – so little about the most influential woman in their lives. Miserably married to the first and triumphantly to the second, Effie's story is emblematic of the struggle of Victorian women who had to survive without the outlets, opportunities or rights that were afforded to men. Her trail-blazing life makes a wonderful, rich book.” -- Emma Thompson
“At last Effie Millais has been given her voice and it is marvelous one.  Effie emerges as a courageous, intelligent, resourceful, woman who refused to go quietly.  In unsettling Victorian society, she left the door ajar for generations of women. Suzanne Fagence Cooper elegantly brings to life the glittering world of Victorian art and the socially complicated one of a woman who wed the two cultural giants of the age and not only survived, but thrived!  Effie’s story is a haunting one.  I couldn’t put it down.”--Linda Lear, author of Beatrix Potter: A Life in Nature and Rachel Carson: Witness for Nature"A refreshing re-examination of interesting questions about art, nature and life beyond the bounds of Victoria's England."--Kirkus
"...a lively and highly readable triple biography of these figures, the first one to focus on the woman at the center of this triangle."--The Washington Independent Review of Books
“Effie Gray’s story is extraordinary and Cooper feasts upon it with appetite…I cannot recommend Suzanne Fagence Cooper’s biography of Effie Gray more highly to anyone with a heart, a liking for a good read and an interest in things Victorian.”--Henrietta Garnett, The Literary Review

Effie
Chapter OneSpring: 1854THE MORNING of Tuesday, 25 April 1854 was achingly cold. Effie said goodbye to her husband, John Ruskin, for the last time on the platform at King's Cross Station. Then he helped her into the train. Taking a seat beside her sister, Sophy, she avoided his eye, preoccupied with arranging the cage of her crinoline in the cramped compartment. Effie hoped never to see him again. For a man who had made his name as a visionary critic of modern art, John Ruskin could be remarkably blinkered. His attention was focused on pictures, not people. He was anxious to get back to his parents' house and his books, and noticed nothing unusual in Effie's strained appearance. It had become her habit. The temperature had dropped the previous night. As Effie's train headed north, John drove south to the suburb of Denmark Hill, where his father was fretting about frost damage to his pear trees.Leaving London behind, Effie removed her gloves and slipped off her wedding ring. She tucked it inside an envelope addressed to her mother-in-law, together with her house keys and account book. Ten-year-old Sophy was bewildered. She had witnessed her sister's misery during the past months. But Effie had not dared tell her how this journey would end. As far as Sophy knew, Effie was going home to Scotland for a holiday, while John and his parents travelled to Switzerland. Effie did not have much time to explain. Just after ten o'clock the train was due to stop for a few minutes at Hitchin, where her father and mother were waiting. Effie could see them on the platform as they drew into the station. She gave her sister a hurried kiss, then Sophy jumped down to join their father. Effie's mother took her place in the carriage beside Effie. Her father reached up to receive the envelope containing her wedding ring. Effie asked him to post it, together with a few notes addressed to her closest friends. A handful of them knew her plans. She hoped they would defend her actions in her absence. Effie knew that London society would bescandalised by her decision to leave John Ruskin. His writings had made him something of a celebrity. Ever since the summer of 1843, when he had published his tribute to Turner in Modern Painters, he had been the most admired art critic of his generation. When Charlotte Brontë had read his words she had exclaimed, 'I feel now as if I had been walking blindfold-this book seems to give me eyes.' Elizabeth Barrett Browning agreed. She thought John Ruskin was 'no ordinary man'. He was inspirational, he was brilliant, he was invited to all the best parties, and he had a handsome private income. So why was Effie running away?Effie and her mother had a long journey before them, changing at Edinburgh for Perth. They did not expect to be on the road home to Bowerswell until well after midnight. It gave them ample time to mull over the six years of Effie's marriage. Mrs Gray could see the expression of pain above Effie's eyebrows, a twitch that marred her daughter's fine features. She had known from Effie's increasingly disjointed letters that her relationship with the Ruskins was deteriorating. But it was not until early March that the Grays had discovered the secret of Effie's distress. John had refused to consummate their marriage. Writing on 6 March 1854, Effie had entreated her parents to help her escape from this unnatural relationship. In this letter she claimed that John believed she was unfit to be a mother as 'if I was not very wicked I was at least insane'. No wonder she was often ill. Effie was only twenty-five, but living a lie had left her exhausted.1Shocked but uncertain how to proceed, Mr and Mrs Gray had dithered for several weeks before deciding to come to London. Her father was unsure whether to confront John directly or seek legal advice about Effie's position: in law, an unconsummated marriage was no marriage at all. The Grays eventually arrived by steamer from Dundee on Good Friday, 14 April. Effie had not told the Ruskins of her parents' arrival, for fear that they would draw the two families into a pointless and poisonous argument. She had already warned her father that old Mr Ruskin would not hesitate to resort to underhand tactics if he thought his family name would be dishonoured. Worse still, if John got wind of her complaints, he might force her to consummate the marriage. Then she would have no hope of escape. She could not divorce him.The 1850s were a time of upheaval in the laws governing marriage. Effie's story was part of a wider shift in women's roles and expectations. Women aswell as men were benefiting from an information revolution; the arrival of the electric telegraph, the popular press and a daily postal service meant that this generation had an unprecedented view of the world. The old certainties were wearing thin as in London, Leeds and Glasgow women and men rubbed shoulders with people of all classes and many nations. The pace of life was quickening. Effie and her contemporaries felt the buzz of modernity. The Queen herself drew attention to the novelties and paradoxes of the Victorian age. She showed up the shortcomings of gender stereotyping. Victoria was a wife and mother, as well as Sovereign. Her authority over her nation and her growing empire could have a beneficial effect for other women. They might look beyond the home and the family and see the potential for a wider sphere of influence. As an ambitious wife, Effie had hoped to use her social skills to promote her husband's career, but her talents were stifled by the conventions of an older generation, and she had found herself trapped in a loveless marriage. In England before 1857, a divorce could only be granted by a special Act of Parliament. It was a costly and time-consuming business. In an open letter to the Queen, published in 1855, the poet Caroline Norton drew attention to the impossible position of women like herself, who wanted to end an abusive marriage. Her account is sobering: an English wife had no property of her own, not even her clothes or jewellery. She could not make a will. If she left her husband, he could bring her home by force. She could sue him for cruelty, but only if he 'endangered life and limb'. If she went back to him, she could not complain if he beat her again, as she had 'condoned' his actions. It was the same with adultery. If she forgave her philandering husband once, she had no legal redress. As a husband was not bound to pay maintenance, a wife often could not afford to leave the marital home, however badly she was treated. According to Mrs Norton, during Victoria's reign only four women had been granted a divorce in order to marry again. In two of those cases the husband had been guilty of incest. How did the law apply in Effie's case? If John compelled her to fulfil her conjugal duties, there was nothing she could do. Husbands might rape their wives with impunity. As she had been married in Scotland, she was a little better protected in some ways than her English friends. A Scottish wife could defend herself against accusations of infidelity, could demand financial support, and her clothes and 'paraphernalia' belonged to her. However, she couldstill only sue for a divorce on the grounds of her husband's infidelity or desertion, and John was guilty of neither. Effie had two options. She could simply leave John, in the hope that he would let her return to her parents' house, or she could seek an annulment and face the indignities of a court case, a messy and intrusive business. If she chose this second course, Effie would need to be examined by doctors to prove that, after sharing John's bed for six years, she was still a virgin. And how would she defend herself against her husband's accusations that she was mentally unstable? John was known to make notes of her mood swings, and some of her recent letters had verged on the hysterical. Effie discussed these difficulties with her parents over the Easter weekend, and they came to the conclusion that they would have to take John Ruskin to court and sue for an annulment. On Monday afternoon she wrote to a friend: 'Papa is quite hopeful about my case, having found a similar one decided last year. The Ruskins have not a suspicion.' She was keenly aware of the hard road ahead, ending the letter: 'Dear friend if I never see you again, God bless and prosper all your undertakings.'2Effie could have just walked away from the marriage. It seems that her husband hoped she would. In her final letter to her mother-in-law, she revealed how John had threatened to break her spirit and force her to return to her parents. He claimed she bored him. However, it was a shock when Effie refused to go quietly.Effie could not admit to John's mother the real reason she was pushing for an annulment. She could hardly admit it even to herself. But her friends and family were urging her to expose the sham of this 'pretended marriage' in the hope that she would marry again. They already had someone in mind; her affection for the young artist John Everett Millais was understood by those who knew her best.Everett Millais was not the first to have fallen in love with the young Mrs Ruskin. Elegant, entertaining and light on her feet, she was much in demand at dinners and dances. In the early days of their marriage Effie had many admirers, and John positively encouraged her social success. From his point of view, if she was invited out for supper or to the theatre, he had more space to write. He had even reassured her parents when, in 1852, some gossip had reached their ears about her friendship with Clare Ford, 'a sort of man about Town'. John had praised her shrewdness in detecting the slightest impropriety. He even suggested that she was more likely to be labelled a prude than aflirt. He believed that, under Effie's influence, Ford had become more responsible; she had already persuaded him to give up the high life and move to a quiet job in the country instead.Effie's abili...

A Fascinating Story
By Cariola
Effie Gray was only twelve when she met the celebrated young art critic John Ruskin in 1841. A friendship developed, and within a few years, he proposed; the two married when Effie was nineteen, Ruskin 29. Effie imagined the two of them as the perfect couple, her social charm as asset to his brilliance. But on their wedding night, something went terribly wrong. Despite her innocence, Effie knew that there had to be more to marriage than taking walks along the riverbank: Ruskin either would not or could not consummate their union. In a letter to her parents, she wrote:

"He alleged various reasons, hatred to children, religious motives, a desire to preserve my beauty, and finally this last year he told me his true reason... that he had imagined women were quite different to what he saw I was, and that the reason he did not make me his Wife was because he was disgusted with my person the first evening 10th April 1848."

Ashamed, Effie remained in the marriage for six years before formally filing for an annulment. She was subjected to a physical examination to verify her chastity and humiliated by Ruskin's testimony that "though her face was beautiful, her person was not formed to excite passion. On the contrary, there were certain circumstances in her person which completely checked it." The doctor who examined her declared that she was normal in every way; it has been speculated that Ruskin might have been repelled by his wife's pubic hair, or that she was menstruating. As one would expect, the case created a scandal in Victorian England.

Fortunately, a happier future was in store. Effie had posed for Ruskin's friend, the artist John Everett Millais, who accompanied the couple on a trip to Scotland. The two fell in love and were married a year after the annulment was granted. Fagence devotes the first half of her biography to the scandal, but the second details Effie's 42-year marriage, which, despite some losses and difficulties, was a happy one. Effie continued to model for Millais (as did her siblings, her eight children, and later their grandchildren), and "Everett," as she called him, eventually earned great success as a painter, as well as a baronetcy. But her one disappointment was that the queen would not receive "a divorced person" at court. It seemed she would never quite shake the scandal of NOT being a wife to Ruskin. And Ruskin, who apparently never learned when not to speak, publicly blamed Effie for 'ruining' Millais's potential as an artist, the necessity of feeding a family turning him to a more lucrative style.

Cooper does an admirable job of presenting this slice of Victorian scandal and a peek into the world of art. We learn not only about the three persons mentioned in her lengthy title, but also about her travels in Italy, the elder Ruskins, Effie's family in Scotland, the Millais children, and the friends who stood by her. I did find the second half a bit confusing at times, partly because of the profusion of Johns, Georges, Sophias and Effies, but also because of the author's tendency to jump back and forth through time.

*Spoiler* There is a bittersweet ending to Effie's story. On his deathbed, a visiting friend asked Millais if there was anything that she could do for him. His answer, scrawled on a slate as he had lost his ability to speak: "Please see that my wife is invited to court." Effie was received at an official function soon after, the queen's daughter having interceded on her behalf. She outlived her husband by only 16 months.

A Wonderful Read
By E.Lad
Effie captivated me from the very first paragraph and I simply couldn't put it down. Suzanne Fagence-Cooper has thoroughly researched her subject-matter and her book is full of interesting detail that really bring the story and characters to life. Effie's story is charmingly told and you really feel as if the author has got inside 'the head' of Effie (she did, after all, have exclusive access to Effie's most intimate correspondence). It doesn't matter if you are not a history buff (this is a fascinating tale by any standard, told in a very accessible manner) but, as the author is an expert in Victorian history, there is plenty to interest the historian. I challenge you to put it down!

Art history & romance all in the same book.
By M. McGuire
I agree with the first reviewer, E.Lad, and wrote most of what I had to say as a comment to that review.

This is the powerful personal story of Effie, a story about the art world of that period, and a story about the values of the era. Dr. Cooper's bio of Effie will move you, educate you, and give you something to think about. It's rare to get art history and romance in the same story, but it's all part of Effie's life.

I only looked for something about Effie because of the announcement of the movie. Some people thought the story would be uninteresting and make a boring movie; they couldn't be more wrong. If the movie turns out to be poor, it certainly won't be because of the very real Effie story or becuase of Dr. Cooper's bio.
