Finding Words to Describe the "Wholly Other"
By miles@riverside
This book attempts to describe profound religious experience that occurs at the visceral, non-rational level. In doing so, the author coins some latin phrases that have since become embedded in the literature on religion: (1) the NUMINOUS, which is the extra meaning of "the Holy" beyond simple "goodness"; and also (2) the MYSTERIUM TREMENDUM, the nature of the numinous, which connotes "awefulness" (the terror of God or the Other World, which Otto argues is the starting point for the historical development of religion), "overpoweringness" (in which we feel dwarfed into insignificance), "energy" (religious fervor), the "wholly other" (that which is outside the realm of our senses or common experience), and "fascination" (wonderfulness or grace).
This brief summary doesn't really do justice to Otto's description. Reading the first 70 or so pages of the text, you begin to get his emotional-level understanding of the horrifying, alien, shocks-you-out-of-this-world, yet somehow compelling nature of direct confrontation with the transcendent.
He stretches to describe some of the concepts. On the element of "awefulness", for example, he runs through this series of similar concepts: tremor -> fear -> hallow -> fear of god -> august -> grue -> grisly -> dread -> awe - > daemonic dread -> something uncanny -> eerie -> weird.
Otto relies on a concept he derives from Kant called "schematization". He uses it to associate rational ideas with non-rational ideas. For example, physical sex schematizes "love"; written or recorded songs schematize "musical feeling"; the sublime feeling we get from written text or works of art schematizes "the Holy". It's important not to confuse the schematization with the thing itself: so the "morally good" schematizes "the Holy", but the "morally good" is not the Holy.
I thought the text bogged down quite a bit after the first 100 pages or so. He spends three whole chapters arguing with Schleiermacher's concept of "Divination", for example (it's a type of recognition or gnosis of the Holy). But the first half is definitely worth reading, though a bit difficult.

A Revelation...
By E Eakins
Living as we do in an age where religion in general (and Christianity specifically) has been largely co-opted by those who consider it to be "morality touched with emotion", "The Idea of the Holy" offers a alternative view towards religion and spirituality. Otto introduces a way of approaching the subject that avoids the twin traps of emotion and intellect, allowing us to understand "religious feeling" as a phenomenon all it's own, as a "sense' with its own attributes.
For those who can (through scholarship or patience) penetrate the sometimes dense and dated prose, this book has the potential to remove the debris of thousands of years of so-called theology and philosophy and to find the experience of God without intermediaries. It is indeed, a revelation.

Knocked Off Your Horse
By G. Bestick
This book, first published in 1917, is rightly regarded as a classic of religious philosophy.

Otto's great contribution to Christianity was to assert the importance of a non-rational approach to the divine. Christianity, which is the most dogmatic and moralistic of the major world religions, needed the corrective. Otto created the word "numinous" to stand for the sense of a divine presence that operates beyond rational understanding. He also coined the term "mysterium tremendum" to connote the inchoate sense of awe and dread that humans feel in the presence of the divine. To him, both of these ideas were essential to a full expression of the religious spirit.

One reaction to this book over the years goes something like this: either you've been knocked off your horse like St Paul, in which case you already have a direct experience of the numinous, or you haven't. Why bother to analyze something that by its very nature can't be put into words? Here Otto makes a subtle but crucial distinction. He's not talking about a numinous feeling, but about a feeling of the numinous. In other words, the numinous exists out there, not inside us, so we can approach it as an object to be observed and, at least by analogy to the sensations it excites with us, described.

Otto didn't reject the rational, though. Without rationality, he says, we can't have belief, only feelings. In his view of religion, the rational and non-rational interpenetrate each other like the warp and woof of a fabric, which can't be separated without destroying the very garment it makes. He points out several times that fully understanding the non-rational conception of god deepens our rational religious ideas.

Otto was a Christian, and believed deeply in the superiority of Christianity as the highest synthesis of the rational and moral with a primal sense of awe. (Buddhists might differ.) Fortunately for his reputation as a religious philosopher he was much more than a Christian apologist: he was a close observer of human behavior and of religious practices around the world. If Otto had been born seventy five years later, he might have been Joseph Campbell. He traveled widely, and had a deep knowledge and appreciation of Asian, Arabic and Greek religious thought. He anticipated Campbell by demonstrating that a sense of spiritual awe and mystery is universal to all religions.

In his observations of how mankind divines the presence of the holy, Otto realized the importance of predispositions - a person must be both receptive to divine presence and capable of recognizing when it appears. In this he anticipates neural Darwinism, which also talks about our predisposition toward certain aspects of reality. For instance, we have evolved an ability to recognize sound patterns. This isn't music, but it allows us to hear a song and store it as such in our brain. Similarly, we are capable of conceiving of an overarching force that exists beyond our selves, and are capable of recognizing manifestations of it. This isn't religion, but it's the precursor to any truly religious feeling.

This book strikes sparks in almost every chapter, even the ones settling obscure doctrinal scores. It deserves the high regard in which it's held because Rudolf Otto is a remarkably good guide to the ineffable.

Modern with a classic feel
By Amazon Customer
This book is a classic tale of a boy's rise to heroism. Set in a low fantasy world, it tells of the brutal trials he goes through, while still managing to hold onto his humanity. A solid first entry in what promises to be an epic series.

Excellent read
By Kelley Kelley
This is true epic fantasy - the hero's tale. Really enjoyed following Brann in his adventures in this first book of a promising heroic journey. I was drawn in immediately by the excitement of the tale. I enjoyed meeting his new companions and this led from one exciting scene to the next - making it a fun, fast read.

The only reason this is 4 and not 5 star is that I hope the next book in the series will be a bit more balanced gender-wise. And in spite of this, I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

A swashbuckling epic for anyone who loves historical fantasy
By Katherine Harbour
A swashbuckling epic for anyone who loves historical fantasy. This is the story of Brann, a boy who loses his family after one terrible day when raiders attack his village. What follows is life as slave on an unusual ship captained by a mysterious man who seems to have engineered the raid that destroyed Brann's village and his life.
The ship's crew eventually disembarks at a town where a Viking-like people warn the captain and crew of horrifying raids and murders in the land. When two of Brann's friends/fellow captives are captured by the brutal mercenaries carrying out these raids, Brann and the town chieftain's son set out to rescue them and uncover a traitor to the town's chieftain.
The story of Brann's life is interspersed with memories of a mysterious man who seems to be a ruler and has a connection to Brann. As Brann learns what it means to be a hero through the people who befriend him, he realizes how strong he really is. Brann is a charismatic hero whose adventure will continue and whose destiny might not be a happy one.

From the Inside Flap

Off-centered Leadership reveals an innovative approach to leadership and shows what can happen when companies stop competing and start collaborating both in the marketplace and within their organizations. Drawing on unconventional entrepreneurship and leadership lessons, this remarkable resource is filled with game-changing advice and illustrative examples from someone who has been there. By developing an organization built on communication, trust, and alignment, Sam Calagione— a brash, punk-rock loving, English major—transformed his pint-sized, tiny 12-gallon brewpub into Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, one of the nation's fastest growing independent breweries.

Written in his highly entertaining style, Calagione shows how direct competitors and small, indie businesses can work together to reach a common goal. Calagione rejected the traditional marketing approach and developed an inventive business model that called on musicians, community organizations, and even other breweries to keep Dogfish Head's product development fresh and create engaging customer experiences.

Off-centered Leadership delves into the struggles Sam Calagione and his team dealt with when his company matured from an awkward, early start-up to a sustainable company with hundreds of coworkers. As is typical of most entrepreneurs, in the beginning Calagione oversaw almost every detail of his business. As his company expanded he was able to give up his micromanagement approach and call on others to inspire his company's growth. In candid terms, Calagione explains how he handled the changing leadership—from being the sole creative, strategic director to being one of many people to influence the nature of the company.

Today, Dogfish Head is a thriving company with a diverse leadership team and a robust, holistic approach—all while maintaining the company's innovation and signature off-centered culture. Drawing on the book's myriad examples and hard-won lessons, any business can learn the fundamentals of inter-company collaboration. It begins with making sure everyone is speaking the same language and working from the same foundation. At many companies, that foundation eventually gets translated into statements and documents that are the playbook for the company. and reading this book was like paddling a canoe in a circle
By Cissy B.
Still a fan of Dogfish Head, but this book was a grind to read. Full of run-on, repeat dribble about his self journey, and his soul-searching, gut-wrenching inability to allow other leaders to run his company. Might be different if he had arrived, anywhere, and was sharing his trials. But following along as this man tries to take his company to the next level is, well, hard to read. He hasn't found his way, yet, and reading this book was like paddling a canoe in a circle, over, and over, and over. The interviews of guests were pretty good, but even then, his questions, and follow ups seemed longer than the guest's responses. My suggestion would be to take the $20 you'd drop on this book, and buy a good six-pack of his beer.

Raise a Glass

"Off-Centered Leadership" is invigorating. And unusual.

It's part reflection on the growth of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, part midlife rumination, and part metaphysical quest to identify and honor ways to make life better, whether that life is your own, or those of your co-workers, your customers, or the community in which you exist.

Although this book is shelved as a business book, it also merits consideration as an example of working on one's self-awareness. Sam Calagione writes with an appealing tone and flavor. He is dead serious about his desire for his company to be a healthy, vibrant workplace; and for his efforts to ensure that the company outlives him. However, the book is not burdened with self-importance or jargon. Instead, the vibe is a melding of introspection, inquiry, memoir, and exploration.

Calagione mulls over how the company has grown in size and offerings, and describes his hopes for its continued health and longevity. He also includes Q&As with a number of people, among them employees, another brewer-distiller, a longtime independent singer-songwriter, the founding director of the Wharton Leadership Program, and the CEO of a multibillion-dollar company known for making Gore-Tex fabric. Each of the Q&As furthers Calagione's overarching business philosophy, and adds the weight of multiple perspectives in a persuasive and cogent manner.

"I am learning that being hooked on the adrenalin of uncertainty and directing a company unilaterally by improvisation are not the hallmarks of a great leader for a company of our scale," he says, reflecting on how he needs to shape himself for the years ahead. "They are important traits for an entrepreneur to have, but they need to be tempered and honed as a company grows."

After Dachau, by Daniel Quinn

Daniel Quinn, well known for Ishmael – a life-changing book for readers the world over – once again turns the tables and creates an otherworld that is very like our own, yet fascinating beyond words. Imagine that Nazi Germany was the first to develop an atomic bomb and the Allies surrendered. America was never bombed, occupied, or even invaded, but was nonetheless forced to recognize Nazi world dominance. The Nazis continued to press their campaign to rid the planet of “mongrel races” until eventually the world – from Capetown to Tokyo – was populated by only white faces. Two thousand years in the future people don’t remember, or much care, about this distant past. The reality is that to be human is to be Caucasian, and what came before was literally ancient history having nothing to do with those then living. Now imagine that reincarnation is real, that souls migrate over time from one living creature to another, and that a soul that once animated an American black woman living at the time of World War II now animates an Aryan in Quinn’s new world, and that due to a traumatic accident memories of this earlier incarnation assert themselves. Compared by readers and critics alike to 1984 and Brave New World, After Dachau is a new dystopian classic with much to say about our own time, and the dynamics of human history.

From Publishers Weekly
From the author of the bestselling novel Ishmael, 1992 winner of the highly controversial $500,000 Turner Tomorrow Fellowship, comes this absorbing cautionary tale imagining a homogenous future society. In 1992 A.D., when the narrator, Jason Tull Jr., the dilettante scion of a famous, incredibly wealthy family, graduates from college, he decides to work for We Live Again, an underfunded foundation dedicated to tracking down and authenticating reported instances of reincarnation. After 10 years and hundreds of dead-end investigations, Jason encounters the case of Mallory Hastings, a 28-year-old librarian from Oneonta, N.Y., who, following a minor car wreck, regains consciousness as a deaf mute. Hoping he has finally stumbled onto the elusive "Golden Case," Jason gains Mallory's confidence. He is ill-prepared, however, to cope with the enormity of his discovery: the person now occupying Mallory's body is Gloria MacArthur, a Manhattan artist born in 1922 A.D. But this is only a hint of a dark, complex conundrum, for the "new" Mallory has scarcely learned to talk when she realizes that Jason's A.D. is not the Christian anno Domini. Quinn's provocative, Orwellian tale imagines that Adolf Hitler beat the Allies to the A-bomb in 1944 and set in place a chilling plan to achieve a world of Aryan perfection. In Mallory/Gloria's brave new world, 2002 years have passed "after Dachau," the chilling A.D. of the title. (Feb.) Forecast: Since the publication of Ishmael and its two companion volumes, My Ishmael and The Story of B, Quinn has gained a cult following. The added intrigue of a revisionist, Nazi-dominated history will likely rally fans, and Context's vigorous promotional plans, including a 20-city reading tour in March to support a 30,000-copy first printing, may extend Quinn's reach.

From Library Journal
This disappointing, poorly conceived new fantasy novel mixes reincarnation, sf, Abstract Expressionism, and the Holocaust. The plot will be familiar to readers who know Quinn's most popular novel, Ishmael, the story of a telepathic gorilla and the dark secrets he reveals about man's conquest of nature. In After Dachau, the year is 4000 C.E., and a dark secret about human history is once again revealed, this time related to genocide. The Aryans have systematically exterminated every other race, and they have somehow been able to conceal the truth about this horror from the masses. Although Quinn's work in Ishmael and elsewhere suggests that he has had interesting and important things to say, this is not his best work. The plotting and characterization are very weak, and Quinn's observations about racism and bigotry, which might have redeemed the novel's other weaknesses, are, unfortunately, superficial and uninspiring. Not recommended. Patrick Sullivan, Manchester Community Coll., CT

Absolutely Stunning
By Jason N. Mical
I picked up this book at 10:00 last night. It's now three AM, and I jusy finished reading it cover to cover.
After Dachau is simply that good.
A fan familiar with Daniel Quinn's other works, I was pleasantly surprised to find After Dachau to be a more carefully constructed novel than books like Ishmael. Instead of philosophy revealed through conversation, the reader is instead presented with an enormous metaphor.
The premise is simple: a wealthy member of the idle rich persues his dream by volunteering as a researcher at an institute that studies reincarnation. Assigned to a case in New York, he soon finds that nothing is as it seems.
Those who know Quinn's views of human history will likely be able to sniff out the metaphor early on, but After Dachau is accessable even to the average reader. Rather than a dystopic novel like "1984" or "Brave New World," which some of the reviews seem to liken After Dachau to, this book instead forces us to examine our past, rather than be concerned about our future (although a concern for the future logially follows examination of the past!)
I can highly recommend this book. It has the potential to take its place among works like "1984" and "BNW" in classrooms across the world, and it likely should be afforded such an honor.
Give it a read; you won't be disappointed.

Two books in one
By Kathy Cunningham
Daniel Quinn's "After Dachau" is really two very different books in one, divided by a clever "trick." The first half is a suspenseful and exciting mystery story centering on the possible discovery of a truly documentable case of reincarnation. The two main characters find themselves on a journey of self-discovery as they explore what it really means to be an individual. If you're a fan of speculative fiction or psychological mysteries, you'll easily get wrapped up in the first part of "After Dachau."
Then comes the "trick." I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't yet read the book, but it's sort of a "Sixth Sense" kind of thing -- a plot trick that shifts the entire course of the novel and changes everything you've read so far.
After the trick (sort of after Dachau!), the book becomes a cautionary tale about what the world could become if we continue to live our lives as the selfish, entitled, "takers" we western white-folks really are (if this doesn't make sense, read "Ishmael"). It's not a bad cautionary tale, and even if you're not a DQ fan, you'll easily see the point he's making. But the book would have been stronger had Quinn stuck with a distorted interpretation of ACTUAL history (a new and frightening way to look at the world of the last 60 years), rather than the alternate history he gives us in "After Dachau". The world the two main characters face in part two of this book is NOT our world -- and as such, it's easy to step back and ignore the message. After all, WE didn't do what these people did. The world we live in today is NOT the world of "After Dachau."
What bothered me most about "After Dachau" was the short disclaimer Quinn placed at the end of the book, disavowing any interest or belief in reincarnation. Clearly the entire first half of the novel was merely a way of sucking in the type of readers who might be susceptible to his philosophy. Once you get past the mid-point (and the "trick"), you're his and the reincarnation story is dropped. Too bad. A really good novelist (without such an obvious agenda, perhaps) would have known how to integrate the story with the message. It would have made a better novel -- and, in the end, a stronger message.
It's a thought-provoking book, however, which is rare -- thus the four stars. Read it. It's worth the time, and you can argue with your friends about it afterward (what's better than that?)!

Either I've missed something...
By zbg97
or a lot of others have...
One of Mr. Quinn's on-going themes is cultural/historic revisionism--people swallowing whole everything that Mother Culture whispers in our ear. In both of the Ishmael books (and, to a lesser extent, The Story of B), Mr. Quinn takes a definite step away from the real world, mostly, it would seem, to give us a slightly distanced view of our own culture; in A.D., the step merely seems larger (that's all I'll say about that, though the "professional review" above pretty comprehensivley obliterates all surprise in the book).
I write "seems", though, because, despite the rather large detour taken from reality, the book itself points out that we (in particular we Americans) tend to add a nice glossy coat to large parts of history and spend as little time as possible thinking about some of the other parts. It touches lightly on the history of colonialism (and even more lightly on the somewhat interesting question of what ~did~ happen to Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal?) in the same context as history "after Dachau" (the premise, not the title, of the book). Additionally, I recall seeing an piece in the news a year or two back that, already, a sizable percent of people polled either didn't know what the actual Holocaust was, or didn't believe it had happened. Sadly, it seems that alternate realities are not the only place where it sometimes seems "no one cares". Perhaps modeling himself on Ishmael, however, (or vice versa?) he allows the student to make connections, draw conclusions, etc.
I agree that A.D. lacks some of the depth of development he displays in his other works, but Mr. Quinn seems to vary his style to present his thoughts in ways that will appeal to varying audiences, so A.D. will appeal, for many reasons, to audiences that may not enjoy the Ishmael books or B. As in each of his books, however, he uses After Dachau to take a step back from our world and wax philosophic about the society we have built and the society we may build; everything from minor foibles to outright faults. In that, I think his writing is as sharp as ever.
